The north coast of Cornwall and Devon is notorious for its jagged shore and its treacherous hidden rocks. The shipwrecks were frequent and the wreckers took advantage of it. They lured ships onto the rocks to plunder their cargo. There was no pity here.

Wrecker's Ruin

On December 19, 1981, the RNLI lifeboat Solomon Browne sank whilst trying to rescue the crew of the Union Star, a coaster in distress off the coast of Cornwall. All eight lifeboat crew members and eight of the Union Star crew perished in the storm.

There were two brothers in the crew of the lifeboat, but the captain would only allow one of them aboard. He knew they were not coming back.
