"Catalysis" is a piece for full orchestra that I composed from September to December 2014. This recording is a reading by the Peabody Symphony Orchestra from April 2015. I thank Hajime Teri Murai and the PSO for their outstanding work, Kevin Puts, Joel Puckett, and Judah Adashi for their guidance and advice, and Edwin Huet for fixing up the recording. 
Fair warning: The ending gets a bit loud. 

Catalysis (2014)

Seen scrawled in “scratch-itti” on a 1/9 subway car in NYC during the summer of 2001: “Veo Hex.” Though I have no idea what it’s significance was to whomever scrawled it there, I immediately knew this was to be the title of the piece I was working on for Philip Colucci and the Metropolitan Ballet Academy. Almost all the phrases are six bars long, and I interpreted the title as conveying something similar to “sixth sense” or “sixth sight,” since “Veo” is Spanish for “I see” and Hex is Greek for “six.” Mostly, though, I just liked the sound of it.

The planes were making noise and I thought I would make noise too!!!! The Blue Angels website autoplays really loud dubstep but this is what I think Blue Angels sound like. It has Airplanes and Formations and Blue and Angels.

64 Colors is a musical catalogue inspired and based on 64 chosen three-note harmonies in expressive intonation (sometimes referred to as Pythagorean intonation and melodic intonation) extensively used throughout the 20th Century by string players such as Pau Casals, Jascha Heifetz and Yehudi Menuhin. The total number of possible trichords excluding inversions and transpositions in 53-tone equal temperament (a Pythagorean division of the octave) is 442, and this piece selects those which contain at least one just interval (in extended just intonation) within each trichord, which makes the harmonies sound strangely familiar. These 64 chords are then inverted twice as the structural frame of the piece, consisting in three chorales. 64 Colors pays homage and owes inspiration to Berg's Violin Concerto (premiered and dedicated to Krasner, who played in 'expressive' intonation), and re-arranges the well-known 'Es ist Genug' chorale, which Berg arranged from a Bach chorale (BWV60), which Bach arranged from an anonymous set of church compositions from the 17th Century.
