Escapism is a theme that runs through the very heart of music. We listen to be transported, removing ourselves from our immediate surroundings as our senses relax and the sonic experience washes over us. During times of hardship, such a sensation is naturally magnified. Music gifts us a way out from our challenges, allowing us to choose how we feel in response to the sounds we hear. This theme has been explored meticulously by Audiojack over the past four years, resulting in the release of their second album, Surface Tension, on Crosstown Rebels this April. 

The pair described the meaning behind the album, encapsulating what inspired them to pursue the four-year project: “In the modern world our attention has become so fragmented with technological distractions. We wanted to create a piece of music that could be an escape from that, where someone can close their eyes and let their imaginations fill in the gaps that the other senses have left behind.” 

The journey sets off with Subterranea, a futuristic breaks-inspired cut that features shimmering female vocals throughout. It feels both euphoric and spacious, taking us to a world far removed from ours. The first collaborative effort comes next in the form of Under Your Skin. Released as the album’s lead single in February, Kevin Knapp’s weighty lyrical offering takes no prisoners, paving the way for the track’s punchy, percussion-heavy backbone. 

The American producer and vocalist is no stranger to the label, having collaborated with Audiojack previously on Implications as well as releasing Flipped on Crosstown’s sister imprint Rebellion. Binaural Dreaming soon arrives, plunging us into a sensory experience thanks to an array of worldwide field recordings, which simulate the experience of a dream. 925 Shift ups the pace, pairing resonant kick-hat combos against a myriad of robot-like synths whilst gentle keys chime softly in the background. 

Surreal yet familiar in one, it opens smoothly into Easy Rider, a groove-led, minimal laced dance number that transports us to brighter days with upbeat piano rolls and dream-like chords. Psychoactive pt. 1 continues the warming theme, delving further into tropical realms. Ethereal pads blend into pulses of acid to form an immersive auditory piece.

Two weeks before the release of their much anticipated new album, ‘Essay’, Karol XVII & MB Valence serve up a final EP from it on Get Physical Music. 

This Polish pair has been at the heart of the European deep house scene for a decade. The Loco Records bosses have won awards for their work as well as being long-time members of the Get Physical family. Their forthcoming album is their best work yet and it features some great collaborations including with UK singer-songwriter and Ninja Tune associate Jono McCleery and, on this single, Keely Timlin. 

The excellent 'Bang Bang' (Back to 2013 Mix) showcases this pair's knack for great composition with its rubbery bass and deep-cut drums. Deft synth twangs, icy hi-hats and mysterious melodies drift in and out while the vocal brings a sense of real seduction. Detailed enough for home listening but sufficiently dynamic to move the dance floor, it is a real gem. 

Next come two exclusive additional versions of the second album track 'Digisong'. The digiclub version ups the drive of the drums while retaining the original's dreamy pad work and subtle bassline, and the dididub strips it back to allow those rich and bubbly drums to shine. 

This is a fantastic final taster ahead of the superb full length to come.

Release twenty-seven on Manjumasi comes from veteran producer Padre, aka Pete Lazonby. Baby Steps and Grand Gestures showcases five diverse tracks of deeply evocative music. Originally released on vinyl as a tight two-sided concept, the digital package now feature additional remixes from Powel and Floyd Lavine.

The Baby Steps open with the crystalline innocence of Jacob's Divine and conclude with the smooth primordial bubblings of Origin of Species. Padre's lucid style is revealed most of all in his collaborations with visionary vocalist and lyricist Oe. The voice is mixed loud and clear, in a more pop than underground way, underlining how unusually well it all fits together.

The Grand Gestures begin with the harnessed dark energy of Feed Your Eye. Sensuous chills and thrills continue with Thousand Fingers , and Last Dance completes the narrative in some romantic sci-fi ballroom. This collection is spirit led and formula free.

‘Get Tropical’ is a sure shot, evident from the opening seconds. Arpeggios, diverse basslines and a deep sub-bass are a few of the things you’ll find in here, and all of them pull together to create a stunning example of modern house music.Next up with ‘Fried Love’ Spettro takes us deeper into his house. As we enter the summer months during a time unlike any we’ve seen before, Esteble’s Amazonica EP flows along with an aire of calmness, offering a respite from the craze. The longtime friends and roommates share a unique ability to converge on untouched rhythms, utilizing a diverse range of influences bred from their true musicianship.

Continuing the EP’s journey, we are excited to announce the Amazonica Remixes. A group of stellar producers have revisited Esteble’s originals, maintaining the deep rooted grooves and understated melodies while pushing the arrangements into new musical directions.

David Orin has been a key figure in New York’s surging deep and melodic scene, and is making his way onto the international radar through a series of productions dripping in quality. His amazing Antemeridian, the debut release for Kora’s label Saisons, turned many eyes and ears in Orin’s direction, including those of Esteble and the team at XYZ. Vanuatu provided Orin with the melodic canvas, as he’s added lighter tones and a lovely backbone to the original. It’s a perfect closer to a remix EP that harnesses the calming nature of the original work, while adding life and character, extending the journey of Amazonica.
