Function lays down the Sandwell District style on this week's RA podcast.

Over the space of the last four years, Sandwell District have managed to carve out a place in the hearts of techno fans worldwide with their austere minimalist sound aesthetic. The label was actually founded by Birmingham-based Peter Sutton (AKA Female) back in 2002, but lay stagnant until it was revitalised with two releases from Sutton three years later. It has since developed into an international effort, with the Sandwell artist roster sharing the label managing responsibilities.

One member of their American wing is David Sumner (AKA Function), who got his first break via a trio of techno twelves for Damon Wild's Synewave imprint. Sumner then went on to launch his own label under the Infrastructure banner, releasing a flurry of his own material before getting in contact with Sutton's Downwards bedfellows Regis and Ian J. Richardson to sign some of their tracks. Their relationship has since grown, with Sumner becoming a fully-fledged member of their techno alliance and using it as a platform for his claustrophobic Sähkö-esque minimalism and bleakly hypnotic warehouse techno. For this RA podcast, Regis and Sumner picked the tracks, while Sumner did the mixing, and, as you might expect, it's a journey deep into the world of techno.

What have you been working on recently?

Finishing up a new Function 12-inch that will form the basis of an album and John's finishing a new Silent Servant 12-inch. Regis has been working with Ancient Methods on a 12-inch for DN.

Where and how was the mix recorded?

It was recorded at our studio in Berlin, Regis and I decided on the records together but it then made more sense to just have me do the physical mix. I had set up a chain that included Ableton, turntables, hardware and effects.

Can you tell us a little about the idea behind the mix?

I think the idea was to somehow represent what we have been doing live/out over the past year (this was a challenge to do in one hour as we play between three and five hours as a rule). From the outset it was about creating tension.

Sandwell District seems to have its basis in a lineage of anonymous techno production. Yet you consent to interviews, do podcasts, etc. How do you walk that tightrope effectively?

I think that's maybe a misconception as artist names do appear on the label. People may come to that conclusion due to operational methods we sometimes employ, as an example, artist names are sometimes added onto a release a few months after it has come out (no doubt due to indecision at the time or some internal squabble). The N/A thing was an experiment in human nature .... probably.

You recently played the Labyrinth Festival for the first time. Can you talk a little bit about the experience?

Regis and Silent Servant have a reputed love for post-punk. Are you also listening to quite a bit of rock music, or is it all techno?

From Sonic Youth to Rob Hood, Einsturzende Neubauten to U.R and The Jesus and Mary Chain to Mr. Fingers there is a connection that makes perfect sense to everyone involved with this so-called label.

What are you up to next?

A Function longplayer, a Sandwell collective album project, a limited Sandwell Mix CD, a remix package of Function tracks featuring mixes from Ben Klock, Norman Nodge and CH-Signal Laboratories and a collaboration with Jerome Sydenham, among a number of other projects.

Crossfade Sounds welcomes back Polish artist Grzegorz Cerafin with his first EP under his own name, Modem. Having previously appeared on the label through his Sin Sensor alias, Grzegorz has also built an impressive discography across respected imprints such as Pablo Bolivar's Seven Villas, Vidno Airlines Records, and Deepwit Recordings. Now focusing on material under his primary moniker, the Polish producer reveals a two-track showcase that is both personal and refined.

Opening with the title selection Modem, Grzegorz presents a journey rooted in deep textures and subtle movement, while companion piece Ironworks carries a story close to his heart. Inspired by his teenage apprenticeship as a locksmith in 1996, the track recalls the resonant sounds of metal sheets that once reminded him of storms, waves, and explosions. What began as a fleeting sonic impression has now, decades later, resurfaced in musical form, fulfilling a subconscious dream that had stayed with him all along.

Some of the music i receive for Noir Music is so well produced that you almost feel like signing the track before have had a chance to the middle of it. Tets is one of those. Everything from kick to the smallest detail are so spot on in the mixdown that it immediately makes me wanna go to the clubs and crank it up on a big system. Of course the track consists of more than just a great beat. The cut through synths and basslines will make any speaker work overtime and the chords build into the breakdown will give both speakers and crowd a well deserved rest as well as put a smile on their faces before they are thrown right back into the heavy madness. Special tune.... need i say more ?

About the EP : 

Some of you might remember our 2016 edition of our annual summer various artists madness called BBQ Techno. Last year, Boot Slap dropped a massively rumbling and summerish tune with "In Your Eyes“, screaming "Berlin“ as at the top of its lungs. In that same edition, Thodoris Trianafillou teamed up with his fellow countryman Economist to deliver a more than serious open air guarantor with "Comodia“.

Now, Boot Slap and Thodoris have joined forces up to bring two more than amazing tracks to life, which we couldn’t resist signing. Both tracks are genuine Connaisseur material, warm and touching sounds embedded in tension-loaded arrangements, dusted with unexpected twists and moments.

The title track "Pillow Flight“ takes you on a trip straight from its first moment, entangling you with mysterious melodies, while its demanding groove keeps pushing you on. The big break with its plucking synth theme releases the track’s full potential, turning it into a massive club monster.

„Who Is It“ takes it even deeper: A strongly meditative atmosphere slowly builds up, adding layer upon layer, until the break leaves you surprised and with a subtle smile on your face while the track takes off into its fabulous finale.

HOSH's fryhide label is back with a first EP that is from an artist other than the boss himself. That artist is Tim Engelhardt, a fast rising German wunderkind who serves up four fantastic tracks that prove why he is going to go on to big things. It is a great signing by H.O.S.H. and one that makes another standout EP on his young but impressive label. 

Engelhardt is currently riding high off the success of his recent album, Moments of Truth, at just 19 years of age. It follows five years of essential tracks on other outlets and all of these have proved he has an emotive deep house and tech sound. Far from just functionality, club tunes, his music is fully formed with real vision and musicality. Says the artist of the release, 'this is a chronicle of what I've been experiencing over the past two years; the transformation from someone who is interested in music and technology to a full solo artist and performer where my reality has become playing music and producing tracks.'

Opening the EP is masterpiece that is Reality, a slow burning tune with wavy beats and carefully constructed melodies that are sombre and tender. It's full of unexpected twists and turns, clever engineering and an arrangement that shows real artistry. As the beats shuffle on you get sucked into the deep emotions and lost amongst the gentle percussion. Then comes Heart Resonance, another moody track with lush chords and pads laid over soft but engaging drums. It's a majestically magical affair that really cooks up some exquisite melodies. 

We Didn't Talk For A While gets a little darker, with more driving drums and rumbling bass that is filled with tension and suspense, even a little menace. Again the chords are well crafted and help stand the track out, then Henriette gets more loose and freaky for the late night hours, with skewed synths and miniature explosions of cosmic colour keeping you locked. 

This is a beautifully crafted EP that marks another great release on this essential and well formed label.

Goodbye 2017, hello future! Monaberry proudly present their final release of the year with the one and only Upercent. New to the label but no stranger to our record collections, the Valencian artist has made a name for himself over the last few years on labels such as Diynamic, UponYou, Snatch!, Sincopat and Culprit among others with a spell-binding sound that’s consistently rich in emotion and hypnotically heavy in weight… A sound that fits the Halle house label perfectly.

Proof is in the listening; ‘Fastic’ is an eight minute mystical movement that ripples with layers and dynamics. The shimmering percussion, the bluesy guitar twangs, the far-away vocal yearns, the gentle enveloping ebbs and flows with elements of tribal, tech and prog and fat dollops of cosmicity.

‘Badarra’ flips the groove coin with a much denser bass/kick relationship. Palpitating, pumping and progressively developing momentum element by element, key transition points include the molten chimes, the scattering percussion, the strange humanisations and the black hole breakdown that sucks deep deep deep into the silence before catapulting you back into the insistent pumps and added Spanish strums. Weighing in at almost nine minutes, once again it’s an open and shut case of full immersion. And Monaberry wouldn’t have it any other way.

What a way to sign out for another exciting year in music. See you in the future…

HAMBURG HEAVYWEIGHTS, ADANA TWINS ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF THEIR NEW LABEL, TAU. WITH A FREE ORIGINAL ADANA TWINS TRACK TO CELEBRATE THE START OF A NEW ERA FOR THE PAIR. 

As longstanding purveyors of their unique brand of house and techno, prime Hamburg exports, Adana Twins announce the launch of their own label, TAU. Having risen through the ranks since the pairs inception back in 2006, Adana Twins have seen soaring success. Working up heat on the DJ circuit before hitting the big time in 2012, with hits ‘Everyday’ and ‘Strange’, they have since worked with the most notable brands, labels and bodies in the industry. Last year, the duo achieved an all-time high, signing to notorious Berlin institution-come-label, Watergate. 2018 has already proven to be a fruitful one with the release of their ‘Jupiter’ EP on Watergate. Despite this, it seems the well-known unwavering tenacity of Adana Twins is undying, establishing themselves as true connoisseurs of their craft, heading up their very own imprint, TAU.

To celebrate their new venture, Adana Twins have produced an original track to be released as a free download via the TAU Soundcloud. New track, ‘Frozen’, features Brazilian experimental-dance music duo, Digitaria. Much alike the Adana Twins, Digitaria have spent their own fair amount of time crafting their sound, playing as part of a four-piece band since 2004. They now create music without rules, pushing the boundaries of what dance music can be. This teaming up of restless musical minds, clearly manifests in the track itself. The signature elements of the Adana Twins sound are presented in powerful kicks and pulsing hi-hats. Eerie vocals serenade amid swirling melodic bells and roaring sirens, building to a spin-tingling crescendo that sees all elements break loose in a pulsating frenzy. Whilst also receiving major support from Techno Heavyweights Tale Of Us throughout the last few months. 
 
The collaboration with Digitaria on ‘Frozen’ paves the way for the overall ethos of new label, TAU; seeking to bring up-and-coming talent to the fore. Having been instrumental in securing their home city of Hamburg’s position on the electronic music landscape, Adana Twins stay very humble in their hopes for TAU; seeking to create a platform for new talent alongside other music they believe in. In true Adana Twins style, they already have two releases in the pipeline, TAU001 and TAU002.

Inaugural release, TAU001, comes from a rising German duo by the name of Innellea is set to drop 31st August. Delivering a unique style of tribal infused techno, Innellea are believed to be one of the up-and-coming talents in the scene at present. TAU002, comes from yet another exciting new talent, BOg. Hailing from Romania, currently based in Paris, BOg first broke onto the scene after being signed to John Digweed’s ‘Bedrock Records’. Over the past 12-years, he has become affiliated with the likes of Solomun and Dixon, releasing on both respective artists own imprints Diynamic and Innervisions; speaking volumes for what can be expected from BOg’s debut EP on TAU.
