Label head Alexander Church is branching out with Life Scripts, a new off-shoot of Configurations of Self focused on more experimental, electronica, breakbeat and ambient sounds. It kicks off in fine style with a new EP from Common Factors aka Church and frequent collaborator James Welsh. 

Church is an adventurous artist who has been in the scene since the mid-nineties. He has made everything from melodic soundscapes to industrial techno under a range of aliases and always draws inspiration from his own deep thinking and desire to tell a personal story. Former post punk band member Welsh is just as free roaming, having made everything from bass to techno on labels like Futureboogie and Phantasy Sound. They have long been working together on some of electronic music’s most interesting projects. All the music by Common Factors is inspired by the use of boutique analog synthesizers from Buchla, Black Corporation, Portabella, and Erica Synths - including the Syntrx and Sky Dada System for this first release.

Church on the theory behind the label: 
 “We create stories about our lives, what they have been and what they will be. This starts in childhood where we weave our perceptions of ourselves and of the world around us into a narrative about what we can and will do. These life scripts then continue to have a deep and unconscious effect on how we live our lives. They shape our self-image, and yet we seldom realise where they come from and are often unaware that they exist at all. Our life scripts are often encouraged and shaped by parents and other family members, whose life scripts were shaped by their parents and so on. In this way, we become a product of our family's history. Likewise, our scripts are also woven by cultural and national forces. Life scripts are not all the same as they may also be significantly affected by individual events, such as being criticized by a teacher or bullied by other children. Life scripts can be very detailed and they can be very vague. They can be very empowering, yet they can also severely limit our lives.” 

The EP opens with six minutes of dreamy breakbeat action on ‘Five Clusters’, a track that is lit up with glistening synth lines and whirring bass, alien sound effects and bubbling pads that make it all the more absorbing. ‘Modelling’ is a subtly uplifting affair with old school post-rave energy, heavenly melodies and glistening FX all powered by dusty breaks. The brilliant ‘Disparaging Patterns’ is more intense, with a darker atmosphere and tightly woven drums, percussion, bass and synth lines all warping and wrapping around each other to hypnotic effect. Lastly, ‘Junctions' is a celestial piece of melodic electronica with ever-evolving lines and shifting chords suspending you in a sea of synth bliss. This is a strong start to what is set to be another fascinating new label from Church.

Joshua Gutiérrez, better known as Slurm, and owner of the label Savia Park presents his highly anticipated debut album 'Rebirth". Savia Park, his label created in 2013 and which now has more than 30 EPs under its belt, (including music from the best producers in Ecuador and a selection of artists from Latin America), has gone from strength to strength and so It seems only right that he presents his album on home turf.
After learning his trade playing warm up and shared scenarios with Jamie Jones, Steve Bug, Damian Lazarus, Maceo Plex, Seth Troxler, Claptone, Ben Klock and many others, learning a deep understanding of the functional aspects of electronic music and the soul that lives with those aspects is clear to see on 'Rebirth' which weaves elements of house and down right groovy techno together, allowing the productions to breath and fleet through a variety of emotions, whilst always delivering a fresh and dynamic sound,
The title of the LP 'Rebirth' isnt just a catchy title but a heartfelt expression of true intent, within the album we find the music adapting and morphing to the circumstances, be it club, festival, warm ups, villas, house parties, all different kinds of energies, vibes and feelings caught wonderfully by Slurm.

Nickon Faith is a 23 year old up and coming producer from Manchester. Nickon has had music play a driving force for most of his life, and took to production at around 2015, building up a repertoire of lush melodic techno and progressive deep house productions as his signature genre. However, also touching on a variety of influences from the likes of breakbeat and industrial techno. Nickon Faith has been honing his craft over the years and has started sculpting a distinct sound for himself as a producer that marries atmosphere, ambience and energy in the form of lush progressive soundscapes, breakbeats and dense acid basslines.
Nickon Faith is going to spread some of his work with the track 'Release Me', a great track full of power and to complement this huge track, Carlos Pires, Eleven of July and Zaria gave us three amazing remixes.

Yorkshire-based label head, Alexander Church, is an adventurous artist who's been making music for over two decades, having run his own record shop in the mid-late 90s. His discography includes everything from melodic soundscapes to industrial techno under a range of aliases, always sourcing inspiration from his own deep thinking and desire to tell a personal story. 

Former post-punk band member James Welsh is just as free roaming, having made everything from bass to techno on labels like Futureboogie and Phantasy Sound. They have long been working together on some of electronic music’s most interesting projects and have now come together as the duo Common Factors to launch the new offshoot of Configurations of Self entitled Life Scripts. 

All the music for the new imprint is inspired by the use of boutique analog synthesizers from Buchla, Black Corporation, Portabella, and Erica Synths - including the Syntrx and Sky Dada System for this inaugural release.

She felt different this morning, as though a switch had been flicked on overnight. Instead of burying her head in the pillows and pulling the duvet over her head, motivation heaved her on to her feet and into action. To do lists were scrawled in her newly purchased diary, each room organised and cleaned, and any remaining bottles of alcohol or packets of cigarettes had been discarded. How long she'd keep this up was uncertain, but for now she felt like a brand new woman.

To kickstart his new label Life Scripts, an off-shoot of his Configurations of Self imprint, DJ and producer Alexander Church is joining forces with Phantasy Sound regular and frequent collaborator James Welsh under the moniker Common Factors. Promising to focus on electronica, breakbeat and ambient sounds, the label stay true to their word with a four track EP that meanders from glistening breaks to uplifting, old school rave and celestial electronica, produced with their specific analog set up of Erica Synths instruments.

We are a niche imprint, established in 2019 by producer & sound designer Alexander Church, fusing academic teachings, music, & passion for visual media.

The concept is based on psychological theories & ideas, with each piece of music representing emotional responses to the processes, feelings, and self-awareness that label boss Alexander Church has experienced through his study of psychology and counselling. The track titles are a direct reflection of these, allowing for greater awareness of the multiple defences, behaviours, and personality traits one has.

Each EP, some of which are vinyl-pressed, is themed around a particular part of Church's life and academic journey, with accompanying media showcasing Church's own photography of rural & empty places, lakes, and the coast. Melodic, atmospheric and expansive sounds paired with deep, futuristic dub, breaks, & techno that connect on both the mental & physical level is what we strive for.

🗿 Life Scripts

As an off-shoot of Configurations of Self, the new Life Scripts imprint will focus on more experimental, ambient, minimal, and breakbeat sounds, inspired by the use of boutique analog synthesizers from Buchla, Black Corporation, Portabella, and Erica Synths, including the Syntrx and Sky Dada System. It stems from the collaboration of Church & frequent studio partner, James Welsh, who together make up the newly formed duo, Common Factors. A name and idea which arose from the two producers’ first encounter and the realization of their many common interests, particularly synthesizers. 

While most of the releases will be from Church & Welsh, they are also open to other stand-out producers with whom they may collaborate.  

Already receiving outstanding early support from the likes of BBC's Erol Alkan & Tom Ravenscroft, NTS Radio, John Digweed, Sasha, Nick Warren, Jamie Stevens, and more, the label has seen 7 EPs since its inception in Jan. '21, including the latest 2022 release with @just-b-4.
