SWITCHSTANCE RECORDINGS presents the fourth outing of their very own FANTASTIC FREERIDING label compilation series. Back in 2001, the German label made its lift-off with the first FANTASTIC FREERIDING album – an instant success which led to many good things in the years to come: A steady flow of EPs and albums from the various label artists. Live and DJ tours around the globe. Features with companies such as Zoo York, Etnies, Billabong, Red Bull or Burton. And collaborations with artists as diverse as The Pharcyde, The Jungle Brothers, Thievery Corporation, Shawn Lee, Tippa Irie, Raashan Ahmad, Kid Loco, Radio Citizen, Bajka, Mo' Horizons, Fort Knox Five and others. 

It's been quite a ride – and it continues with this new outing: FANTASTIC FREERIDING 4 is once again showcasing the label's trusted talent alongside some new players.

For those few listeners unfamiliar with SWITCHSTANCE RECORDINGS: The label has been following its very own path, serving an organic mixture of music that is rooted in Hip Hop, Funk and Reggae, created between traditional and electronic production methods and peppered with recent club music licks – while never falling for any short-circuit trends. Thus, FANTASTIC FREERIDING presents a healthy palette of typically versatile and timeless musical outings from the label's original artists: Beatsmith PROTASSOV brings his self-played-and-sampled stompers to the table, melancholic stalwart KABANJAK still got the b-boy blues for you, out-there duo ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS arrive with their heads nodding heavily, while modern latin lovers DEELA go directly for the dancefloor. 

FANTASTIC FREERIDING 4 also has some new fire burning: VOID PEDAL is a sound engineer and recording artist from Chicago who is making his SWITCHSTANCE RECORDINGS debut here with three burners for which he played, sampled and sequenced all instrumental parts himself – a promising entrance into the SWITCHSTANCE canon. And last but not least ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS are pleased to feature MARTIN PERNA, founder of the beautiful ANTIBALAS AFROBEAT ORCHESTRA, on flute in their track „Tuff Gong“, a vibrating breakbeat tribute to Robert Nesta Marley. 

All things put together, FANTASTIC FREERIDING 4 continues the path of organic and positively powerful music which has set SWITCHSTANCE RECORDINGS steadily apart from other labels now for more than the past decade – and will do so in the future!

Christmas time is known to be the merry time of the year, but reality proves that there is as well a dark side of Christmas. Individual tragedies can add sad moments to these “holy” days and stay mostly undiscussed. Kabanjak´s “Holy Night” aims to give this sadness and desperation a musical voice.

The original “Holy Night” is known to be an international Christmas classic. A song that brings out childhood memories in people hearing it. Full of positivity and hope. But the reality of Christmas is not always like that. Everyone can find examples for themselves.
Kabanjak reworked the theme of the song in his very own way by adding a dark and psychedelic groove to it. He turned the happy major song into a dark and tragic minor version.

Kabanjak - The Dooza Tapes Vol. 1 (snippet mix)

Kabanjak has been exploring genres of all sorts of design that pull from hip-hop, electronica, reggae and soul to create some of the most forward-thinking music to come out of Europe. Stepping out this time as a one-man band, the musician has orchestrated a new work which employs all of his talents as a producer of up-to-the-minute sounds.  
 
Kabanjak’s latest solo venture, Dubs and Downs, strips his collective influences down to the lone elements of reggae and dub. Largely instrumental, the EP opts for tempos that are never disturbed beyond the fuss of a soft, tropical breeze. Dubs and Downs evokes the gritty living of coastal life and takes its cues from reggae’s most diverse spectrum; everyone from Lee “Scratch” Perry and King Tubby to Augusto Pablo and Sugar Minott can be referenced.  
 
With only a spare seven tracks, Kabanjak manages some truly sultry gems. “Home Again” (featuring Til Schneider), an undulating groove of equatorial heat, is accented with horns that are drawn across the number with painterly, breezy streaks. “Everything is Alright”, which features on the EP in three different versions (each one a slight variation in groove and melody), adds chunk and heft to its rhythm, the hollows of its groove filling up with the resonance of deep bass. 
 
Keeping the corners of these structured rhythms stone-tight, Kabanjak allows ample room for a flush of blue melody to expand within the perimeters. Some of reggae’s most pronounced elements are found here (prominent use of the melodica features throughout) and Dubs and Downs employs a judicious mix of one-drop and steppers, styles given fresh designs through the producer’s impressive arrangements. 
 

 
 
On the EP’s most strident cut, “Boomdraw”, guest Amlak Redsqaure offers a honeyed toasting that slightly roughens the otherwise smooth flow of this organic Reggae. The same number appears yet again as an instrumental to allow a closer listen at all the smaller nuances that go unnoticed behind Redsqaure’s cavernous vocal. 
 
It is perhaps opening number “More Love” which sums up this experience of unperturbed, island living, the untouchable calm in both the waves of the sea and sand. Echoing with the colours of twilight, the number perfectly sets the bar high for club-driven reggae, and is delivered by a well-known name in underground music culture.

This is the snippet mix for the Amlak Redsquare´s single "Judges (Kabanjak Remix", which is out on the 4th of August 2017.

Jamaican singer Amlak Redsquare, the nephew of legendary Dancehall artist Spragga Benz, is an upcoming energetic Reggae artist with a strong political dissent in his music. 

After performing on the same Reggae event in Cologne as Switchstance Recordings head Tom Strauch that meeting resulted in a vocal feature on Kabanjak´s latest release „Dubs & Downs“. However that collaboration was just the start for more to come. 

While having his solo album „Book Of Judges“ out making heavy rotation in the international Reggae world Amlak asked Kabanjak to do a remix for his title track „Judges“. That one come out so strong that it was an easy decision to give it it´s own proper release. 

Being big time Reggae heads we here at Switchstance Recordings are happy to present this uplifting but same time socially critical artist who brings back the positive power and guidance of the original Rastafari movement. Welcome to the world of Amlak Redsquare!

A hot contender for this year‘s favourite summer soundtrack: Kabanjak and Fat Albert Einstein deliver their stunning melodica dub project "Dub O‘ Dup“!

Kabanjak is the producer behind many of the versatile outings from Switchstance Recordings – the German label on which the American soundsmith Fat Albert Einstein released his album „After The Beep“ in 2011. Now both come together for a trans-atlantic outing which is deeply rooted in the Jamaican dub styles of masters like King Tubby or Augustus Pablo in the 1970s and takes their concepts into the NOW: 

Bass and rhythm are the body. Melodies and harmonies are the mind. Delays and reverbs are the spirit. 

Multi-instrumentalists Kabanjak and Fat Albert Einstein once again show the many facets of their trade, both composing using bass, guitars, organ and various keys; most importantly melodica. Add to this Fat Al's tough live drums and Kabanjak's employment of flutes, percussions and general sound wizardry on the boards. The result of this alchemy is called „Dub O‘ Dup“, a truly dubbed-out piece.

Switchstance Recordings presents you the second collaboration project for 2012. After the dubbed out Reggae EP “Dub O’ Dup” by Kabanjak & Fat Albert Einstein follows the long awaited team up of Brace & Kabanjak.

These two musicians are no strangers to the international scene, with Kabanjak being an artist on the ESL music roster and Brace being a Canadian DMC Champion and Juno Award winner (Canadian Grammy). Both have collaborated on such successes as Ancient Astronauts’ Classic EP, Into Bass and Time album as well as Kabanjak’s debut album Tree Of Mystery. Through these experiences they felt it was only natural to produce together.

Upon Brace's first visit to Kabanjak’s hometown Moers, his host suggested to visit the town’s park. Brace never did see the park in Moers, however they worked for three days next to a tree of mystery to produce the beginnings of what would later become Abra Kabra.
Sessions were passed back and forth between them, each time surprising one another with added tracks which included newly recorded instrumentation and sequencing with every session exchange. Though this project was recorded on two different continents, it sounds like both were working in the same studio at the same time.

Besides the rich live instrumentation by Brace and Kabanjak, artists from around the world were asked to join in and play a role. These performers include the likes of Hugo Kant (France), T.J Blair (Winnipeg, Canada) and Guillaume Fouquette (Montreal).
The 5-track EP is a journey into mystery and magic, where the two collaborators invite you to allow your mind to go where the music guides you. The record will be released on November 23rd 2012 on Switchstance Recordings.

Brace & Kabanjak - Abra Kabra (Snippet Mix)

Switchstance Recordings presents the „Best Of Remixed“ compilation, a collection of versatile remixes from their 12 year old catalog. Artists like Radio Citizen, Perch (Zion Train), Fort Knox Five, Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop, Kid Loco or the labels own tinkerers Ancient Astronauts, Kabanjak, Protassov and Deela represent the vast sound facets of the labels style on this release. Chosen from over 30 releases, this selection marks the delights from music inspired by Hip Hop, Funk, Latin, Reggae, Dub and Breakbeat. Each remix takes the original versions into another direction but still predicates the labels philosophy. "Switchstance" is taken from the culture of boardsports, meaning the skill used to change the stance (easily) by switching one's foot position. The stance in freestyle Snowboarding or Skateboarding, is either riding in "regular" (left foot forward) or "goofy" (right foot forward) position. This identifies a really skilled rider and opens up a whole new world of trick combinations.

The label's creed and therefore the style of its producers and DJs is to have ultimate freedom, whether in their musical movements or in "switching" between various styles. The aim of the label is to combine early musical influences such as Funk, Jazz, Latin, 90´s Hip Hop and Reggae with the most progressive techniques of electronic music production in order to create a new dynamic sound that pays respect to the diverse cultures it comes from.
