Klein's Decline

According to lead singer Dale DeLong, a good song "stops you in your tracks and paralyzes you for a moment," and Roman Candle passes that test. Although the song immediately sounds like an energetic, summery pop tune, the lyrics tell a different story:

"When I was 13, I went to see the fireworks, and during the display a girl my exact age was killed by one of the fireworks that fell over. I saw it shoot across the grass with my own eyes, and it could've very easily been me. The first verse - "stand back, they're gonna light it" - those could have been the last words she heard that night. This was an innocent girl who just wanted to see some beautiful colors as she looked up at at the sky that night. Writing this song, I started thinking about how the fireworks didn't stop after the accident, people kept on laughing and talking and enjoying their night, including me. So inside of this three minute pop song, I finally got to empathize with this girl and her family and say 'I'm sorry I cared so much about whatever I was doing to not stop and really truly feel what happened that night' - and the song reflects that contrast between a really happy, festive moment and this serious thing that happened."

Through high school friendships, two Craig's List ads (Musicians Wanted, not Missed Connections), and a few years of trial and error, OTTAWA was born on Cleveland's west side in the winter of 2014. Since then, lead singer Dale DeLong, guitarists Will Hooper and Tim Czajka, drummer Steve Crobar and bassist Chris Williams have developed a sound described by Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter Troy Smith as "a brand of garage pop that merges elements of indie-rock, blues and new wave that's quite melodic and hypnotizing."

After the release of Roman Candle on 01 July, Ottawa will embark on an eight-city tour spanning Northeast.

Roman Candle

This demo of "Weekend Mohawk" was recorded by Frankie in an unknown motel room in Washington state Oct of 2014 using garageband, a usb microphone, and a casio keyboard. One of the batteries in the casio keyboard was loose creating a distorted bass sound that cannot be reproduced.

While attending Purchase College Nicole Schneit met Dan Deacon, a friend and former collaborator who once described her comforting songs as something akin to "a favorite blanket wrapped around you." Though she played in several bands in college (including the noise jam band Ferrari with Deacon) she eventually shifted her focus to writing and recording intimate pop songs under the name Air Waves, a moniker inspired by the title of a Guided by Voices song.

After extensive touring in support of her 2010 album Dungeon Dots, Schneit took some time off from writing. "It was crucial for my creative process to take a step back from making music. Part of being a performer is having confidence to just be vulnerable. I needed to regain that confidence to make an album again after Dungeon Dots," she says. The vulnerability she speaks of is part of what makes her music as Air Waves so compelling. Even her fictional narratives employ an almost preternatural honesty that feels emotionally naked, exposed, and ultimately relatable.

Her new album Parting Glances takes its title from the 1986 film of the same name, in which Steve Buscemi portrays a gay man navigating the difficulties of being in a relationship in Reagan-era New York. "I've never seen a film with Steve Buscemi in it that I didn't love," says Schneit. More than just identifying with the story, she's interested in the in the lasting effect of the parting glances we share with strangers in our everyday encounters. She explains "You see all sorts of physical and emotional traits on the train. From people puking, making out, screaming, crying, laughing, dancing, grooming, etc. We encounter each other in the thick of our complex lives by simply looking at each other all the time. These glances are mundane and fleeting but also powerfully intimate." The lingering impact of those brief moments seeps into the details and imagery she delivers through her lyrics on Parting Glances. With energizing hooks and a disarming lack of pretense, the songs on Parting Glances burn with ebullient energy and an emotionally engaging core from beginning to end.
