London duo @sicariasound has reinvigorated dubstep by pulling from every side of the 140bpm spectrum. The pair of Ndeko and Imbratura are longtime friends who have an unspoken understanding when it comes to DJing together, as was frequently demonstrated at their residency for Mala's Deep Medi. They also run their own Cutcross label which can serve up sounds that reference anything from breakbeat to grime, rave to bass. Despite this success - and the news this week that they are to put out Binate, their first official EP - they have also announced that they will disband the project at the end of 2021.

Thankfully, we will always have the mix to come back to, because it is a perfect embodiment of their sound. Well informed but never too serious, it takes in ice-cold wobblers as well as industrial strength steppers and skeletal, minimal dubstep sounds that hark back to the golden era. The whole thing is stitched together in a way that shows up the contrasts of light and dark, spaciousness and intensity and ensures you remain fully locked in.

Dekmantel Podcast 323 - Sicaria Sound

The 5th installment of the Reptilian Mixes marks a change in the series, as for the first time in the Blockbuster franchise, the main protagonist is not a Reptilian, but a Doggo. Not just your usual good boï, but simply the best. 

Rafon (@rafon27) and the crew go way back. The mattress king quickly became a roommate, a best mate, a partner in parties, and co-host of Mulack Space Mixes. During these years we witnessed @ordinateuf co-founder translate his passion for music into pure dedication. First into digging, then into mixing, and through all that, into good old partying. Along the way, this work paid off, and this mix is the expression of it. 

It’s groovy, moody, and gets you slowly but surely into that kinky house frenzy you just wish huge speakers would blast in the morning hours of a dirty club. The mix is as aced as the Rafon aces his pasta: with tension, love, and style. He got the secret recipe, and oh boy it’s a good one: the mix « à la Rafon ». You’re going to ask for a refill, with extra tunes. And Parmigiano.

Rafon - Reptilian Mix 05

Darwin (@darwinspec) juggles many different roles in dance music as well as she juggles her records in the DJ booth. The Canadian-born, Berlin-based artist runs her own REEF parties at Berghain, and has nurtured a wealth of emerging talents on her SPE:C label. She is also the founder of Clean Scene, a climate action collective that wants to explore a more sustainable future for dance music. They recently authored a stark report about the industry's carbon footprint, which you can read through cleanscene.club/report.pdf. 

Darwin's sound is rooted in various UK styles, from bass to dubstep, garage to breakbeat. That is evident in the 100-minute mix she lays down for us this week. It opens with thoughts about environmentalism and some indigenous jungle recordings before grinding through chunky Afro drum patterns and supersized bass. The pressure builds throughout, the cavernous rhythms grow ever more muscular as the urge to snake your body becomes overwhelming. It's a perfectly balanced, well-controlled mix that showcases the irresistible power of heavyweight bass music.

Deon is a Detroit native whose roots stem from the crates of family. Growing up hearing many different styles of music in the household is the inspiration behind his range of selection. Inspired by everything from jazz, funk, & soul, to more modern black dance music forms like hip-hop/r&b, house, techno, & brokenbeat. 

His career in Detroit began as resident DJ & organizer for the monthly hip-hop showcase "Bluecollar Gentleman". 
At the same time Deon started working alongside Theo Parrish & Sound Signature, 
helping organize and promote the Music Gallery party series. 

Spending years consuming & working in Detroit's underground would help inform his own more dancefloor/community oriented event, "Healin' Session" as well as the immersive music and art experience, "Black Music".

Recently, Deon was asked by the legendary Theo Parrish to help him selecting artists that he knows in order to be part of a great compilation, representing the originality and essence of the Detroit's sound.

WNCL Records is a label operating out of South London run by West Norwood Cassette Library aka Bob Bhamra - an underrated producer and DJ we’ve long been an admirer of. Since Bob inaugurated the imprint with his ‘What It Is’ 12″ back in 2010 the label has gone on to release a steady stream of top quality music from the likes of Canadian recluse Kevin McPhee, the don Don Froth and cave-dwelling Techno talent J.Tijn. Bob doesn’t have a particularly strict criteria when it comes to choosing the music he releases, he simply has to like it. In the years before WNCL he put out some mid 90s House trax as The Bob Bhamra Project, a bit of late 90s Drum and Bass with Plastic Soul, a few Ambient-y releases at the turn of the millenium with Data 70 and one-off sound projects as No.1 Astronaut.

Continuing with their fifth birthday celebrations Bob had originally planned to do a WNCL Recordings only mix to celebrate the label’s 5th anniversary but, when he realised that November 2015 also marks the death of Roger ‘Wildchild’ Mackenzie, he decided to turn in a tribute mix to his productions. As Bob says himself, “2015 is the 5th anniversary of WNCL Recordings. Alas, 2015 also marks 20 years since the sad passing of legendary UK House producer, Roger “Wildchild” Mackenzie. For my Hyponik mix, I wanted to pay tribute to the underground hero whose music has been a constant influence on West Norwood Cassette Library and the WNCL label.” RIP.

Darwin's In Session Mix presents all the kaleidoscopic facets of her sets, beginning with multidimensional matrix-like space sounds and slowly moving into her groove of deep UK garage before floating into break beats and infectious dancefloor cuts. 

Water bubble textures and acidic noises make an appearance before she ends with jacking footwork beats, setting you in the middle of the jungle.

Here she showcases an array of sonic explorations, a focus that has made her one of the key guiding forces in the underground scene today.
