Berlin-based record label Odd Pleasures is finally born. Curated by acclaimed Chilean duo Random Atlas (SXDNS155/FREEDL024), the new South American/European imprint will be devoted to exploring the darker side of disco and focus on bringing a fresh blend of Electronic and Rock, Post Punk, New Wave, and everything in between.

For its debut release, ODD Pleasures has prepared a Worldwide Various Artists Compilation including tracks by well-known producers from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Turkey: Alvee, Persona RS, Marzian (SXDNS128), Alex Aguayo, Ducati Flux, Javier Martinez (SXDNS104), Fat&Bald, Ludviq, Aural Trace, and the label honchos themselves make up the dream team. 

Every artist presents a delicate piece of their musical exploration that gives life to an obscure, mysterious, and futuristic sonic universe. Powerful beats, underpinned by catchy and dark bass lines, New Wave synthetic textures, and atmospheres with hints of Post Punk and Krautrock elements. ODD Pleasures’s first compilation proposes a storytelling journey that crosses the line between the dancefloor and casual listening, a soundtrack to anyone who seeks an immersive driving force.

The track we were solicited to premiere/review was cooked with love in Santiago, Chile, by talented producer Roman Sebastian aka Persona RS, also a member of MKRNI, Roman & Castro, and Follakzoid. His “Space Pod”, definitely one of the highlights of the release, is a groovy and bouncing peak time cut with a powerful bassline and a stunning synth layer, a powerful contribution to a mighty compilation. Back after a little summer break, Jakob Mäder returns with a new EP on his own label Constant Change. Four tracks directly for the dancefloor with an uplifting vibe through the whole EP. „Sun Will Rise“ got what peaktime needs, acid lines, DX7 chords and - what else would you expect in 2021 - a powerful arp bass! All DJs sometimes need the right stomper track, so „Empower“ is here for you. The rise of the "balearica movement" in the last years has been well supported by dj's and producers from Switzerland, being Zurich one of the most influent cities of the scene, contributing artists like Lexx or Kejeblos and labels like "Phantom Island" that lately have been inside the radar more than ever.

Besides of his brilliant work as "mixer" for different labels, Florin Büchel has been building a great reputation under his both monikers. "CCO", where the Swiss' producer explores darker sounds like acid or elektro; and under his own name where he dares with more sunny and hedonist productions.

Florin Büchel lands in MM Discos with "Serendipity EP" a work that follows the style of his productions signed on "Phamtom Island". Always loyal to his love for analogue machines, Zurich' based producer delivers a heavenly landscape, built beat after beat with a charming laid back style, cheerful melodies and playful percussions.

Romain FX takes over the control on "Serendipity" and brings the track to his own territory, delivering an effective "80's-italo-styled" version of the original made by Florin Büchel.

Closing the EP, MM Discos' in-house producers Bonnie & Klein, take back the mediterranean vibe and the sunglasses to remind us that the summer hasn't finished yet.

Lion’s Drums full length exists as an exploration in multiple dimensions. First by challenging the notion of the album format by presenting a body of work that lies snuggly between remixes, edits and original works and secondly as a means to delve into the transcendent potential of the drum. The album sets the tone by putting these two concepts fully on display with its hypnotic chant, swaying one into ease over the first two songs. In orderly cue folding and unfolding, meditatively through, melodies as muddied pastelle whispers cast over the measured language of the drum. Breaking away from the musing themes of the opening songs we find an ecstatic ritual in "Tanz der Körperlinge" and "Journey to Middle Earth”, two distinct varieties but both of the same perennial species. Inky ether seeps back in through the second half of the album with a peak of frenzied tumbling toms and incongruous textures hovering above in the Manos Tsangaris’ collaboration “Crying Tafel” and his re-imagining of Tullio De Piscopo’s unhinged drum excursion “Fastness”. The closing exemplifies the edit/remix/original ethos proposed for this work with Lions Drums drawing from tapes and original material of electronic pioneers Suzanne Ciani and Roberto Musci. Drawing from unreleased music and song sketches by the original artists as well as field recordings from travels & studio sessions made by Roberto Musci & Manos Tsangaris in the 80's and early 90’s he constructs a side winding journey through playful textures and ethereal moods.

The Avon Guard is a mainly “indie” band from London, whose unique sounds seems
to be taken out of a Tarantino’s movie. A band, which started through friendship-
over 20 years of it- but until now, had not released any albums, only “Forget”. They
are launching this great EP, which contains one of the most awaited remixes in
Jonestown Records. Modernphase, one of the members of Gameboyz, who is an Audio
Engineer, producer, dj and also the co-owner of the label Melómana Records, is
releasing one of his most important jobs as a remixer. This is something he wants to
make clear: that one of his best skills is indeed, to remix progressive bands such as The
Avon Guard.
Modernphase -who has already released different installments for labels such as Play
Pal Music, Nein Record or We Play Acid- releases this time and under Jonestown
Records, a more dance-floor oriented remix: Slow Mo, Disco or New Wave are some of
the sounds which come up into this track, full of wonderful elements which develop
through the whole piece.

Another freebie, peeps: In recent years, MAN2.0 (SXDNS081) turned to music production as a means to channel his ADHD, and after gaining some attention from the Ransom Note, was signed to Tronik Youth's Dark Disco and Post Techno imprint Nein Records. As a DJ, he has played numerous gigs in Berlin, most notably destroying the dancefloors of Crack Bellmer and the mysterious J Kerfuffle [sic], “Just one of the many reasons he is wanted by the German authorities”.

Dark nights and rising cities are conjured in the soundtrack grandeur of “Mind Guardians” before the solar synthwork of “Prison Planet.” Elements of the otherworldly course through the four tracker, fantastical images and the splendour of space being captured for the floor.
The B-side maintains the magic with the crusading crescendos and swashbuckling lines of “The Awakening.” BPMs rise for the finale. Chords dance and twirl with spritely charm in “Spirit Gate”, neon flecked percussion racing to the finish line.
