James Bright presents the Third instalment from his newly minted Life On Earth Recording, serving up Four Balearic cuts on the characteristically scintillating ‘The Garden Of Sound’ EP.

With a prolificacy that is more than matched by his impeccable attention to production detail, James’ nuanced and transportive music continues to charm fans from all corners of the esoteric underground. With releases under his belt for the likes of NuNorthern Soul, Sprechen, Quattro and Music For Swimming Pools, the decision to launch his own imprint allows him the opportunity to freely explore the far-reaching realms of downtempo, electronica, nu-disco, deep house and more. Following on from the label’s last outing “TRICKS EP”, he subtly switches pace from seductively languid territory to Sun streaked rhythms and shimmering electronica.

“Hands Together” further raises the tempo of the EP with a hot, Latin percussive pulse, fizzy electronics and a throbbing bassline.

“Edgy Future Discotheque” is the name of the brand-new and fresh-from-the-oven compilation released on the vital “Madchester”-based imprint Sprechen, but it could be also the name of the genre the label favours to publish. Its flawless curation process guarantees a catalogue full of, yes, edgy, out-of-the-box Disco-soaked gems, and the Volume 5 of its VA series does not go in another direction. On board, a true dream team of collaborators: Andy Buchan (SXDNS012), Flash Atkins, Ed Mahon (SXDNS068), Tom2Trax, Jimmy Turnbull, Mangetout, and Daco with a solid remix for Mr. Atkins’s contribution.

The track we were solicited to review comes from the criminal mastermind of Tom2Trax, an experienced British DJ who has been strolling through the muddy and marshy terrain of the production realm since his first appearance on Sprechen’s “Edgy Future Discotheque Vol. 3” in February last year.

His “Heatwave Horizon” seems to have been named after our doomed status quo: The near future will be bleak, brace yourselves! But before we all die due to the current and forthcoming climate emergency events, let’s melt on a packed and sweaty dance floor, shall we? Tom2Trax’s cut is devoted to triggering momentary happiness not only at hot pool parties but also on dark indoor grounds: Frolic percussive elements, suitable vocal hooks, and a correct amount of acid set the mood of one of the best tracks of the compilation.

PREMIERE505 // Tom2Trax - Heatwave Horizon (Lunar Mix)

She may be making her first appearance on NuNorthern Soul, but Zeynep Erbay is no newcomer. A classically trained pianist who took a turn towards the dancefloor while at university, the Turkish DJ/producer earned her first release on Compost Records way back in 2007 after taking part in the 2006 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy programme. Since then, her career has been on an upwards trajectory, with releases on Fools Gold and Soul Clap Records confirming Erbay as a genuine rising star of the underground electronic music.
 
On the ‘Healer EP’, the Istanbul-based producer showcases the more atmospheric, sun-kissed end of her productions, taking a turn away from synth-powered, disco-leaning club tracks towards something more suitable for al-fresco events, sun-down sets, and sofa-bound listening sessions. Inspired by a poem inscribed on the back cover of the EP, Erbay’s two original instrumental tracks simply ooze with emotion. The poem tells the story of a whale searching for her family while helping others along the way, which acts as a metaphor for our wider search for belonging and acceptance.
 
This aural narrative first comes to the fore in opener ‘Heart of a Healer’, a slowly unfurling stunner in which emotion-rich chords, gentle electronic melodies and Erbay’s poignant and picturesque piano motifs – reminiscent of the classic works of 2000s downtempo duo dZihan and Kamien – gently rise above a chunky dub disco bassline and mid-tempo, triple-time drums. The story unfolds further on the effortlessly emotional ‘Healer Whale’, where Erbay’s impeccable piano playing ushers in languid, jazz-flecked drums, dubby bass, sumptuous synth-strings and slow-moving chords. It’s an impeccable, life-affirming composition that’s as beautiful and memorable as they come.  
 
NYC-based Italian Danilo Braca, who also mastered the release, provides a fine club-focused fix of ‘Heart of a Healer’, adding Erbay’s brilliant chords and piano riffs to a bed of crunchy machine drums, undulating TB-303 acid lines, punchy electronic bass and bubbly synth sounds.  NuNorthern Soul regular Marshall Watson also handles ‘Healer Whale’, first delivering a fine ‘Remix’ version that effortlessly blurs the boundary between dub disco and Balearic nu-disco, before serving up a shorter, ambient ‘Reprise’ version full of gorgeous chords, warming bass, cascading electronic melodies, effects-laden piano, and atmospheric field recordings.

We have already said it before in one of our premieres, let’s say it again: There are MANY interesting labels and outstanding artists out there that are still flying under the radar. Acclaimed by their local communities but still not nation/worldwide sought, they keep fighting the good fight either aiming to become rich & famous or keeping things simple & easy, just to make other people smile for a while with their craft.

Dance Petrol Records is one of these labels. With an incredible catalogue featuring high-quality House Music and its sub-genres, we can safely bet you’d find proper gems after only a few minutes of browsing their rich collection of releases.

So.undso is one of these artists. The German duo are the co-owners of Dance Petrol and can’t get enough of handing over top-shelf material not only on their own outlet but also on international imprints such as AWK, Lisztomania, and Inhale Exhale, just to name a few.  

The remixer is no different: Munich-based Jorginho Joao, the other boss of DPR, makes good use of refined production expertise and sharp creativity to bring to life frenzied peak-time House Music themes. 

So.undso’s “Alte Spuren”, released originally in May this year, comes back to the shelves with its “refueled” version featuring fangy remixes by Schegg, A_P_F_L, and of course, Jorginho Joao, who brought “Gedränge Vor Der Fähre” to a different turf: If the original is a melodic and trippy 106 BPM beauty, JJ’s 130-BPM interpretation is definitely a frenzied and lively beast.

Red Pig Flower delivers her ‘We Need Space’ EP via Switzerland’s Adam’s Bite thisOctober, comprising four original compisition’s from the Korean-Japanese artist.
The past decade has seen Red Pig Flower’s unfaltering drive and ambition as a producer and DJ take her across the globe to play at hotspots all over, from Berlin’s Panorama Bar
and Hoppetosse to Tokyo’s WOMB, Concrete Bar Seoul, Pikes Ibiza and beyond. On top of this Red Pig Flower has a growing back catalogue of releases and co-runs the Tokyo based Sound Of Vast imprint alongside Knock. Here though, we see Red offering up her
new EP via Swiss imprint Adam’s Bite, home to music from the likes of Nu Zau, Barac,
Cristi Cons, Traumer and Ion Ludwig, a perfect home for her psychedelia infused stripped back house sound.
Up first is the original version of title-track ‘We Need Space’, a merging of winding bass grooves, skippy percussion, modulating, bubbling synths ebbing and flowing amongst one another while a hypnotic, spoken word vocal winds within the groove throughout. An instrumental version follows next, as the name would suggest, pulling back the vocal elements for a more robust, drum driven feel.
‘Separation’ then opens the flip-side with a more frenzied feel via and amalgamation of vacillating synth flutters, dubbed out percussion and bumpy low-slung drums which all dynamically evolve and retract throughout. ‘The Feeling’ then completes the EP, diving back into deeper realms with murky atmospherics, vocal chants and gritty stabs at its core, underpinned by a bouncy stab led bass groove and crisp, crunchy drums.

This release has had a long time to mature and we are very happy that the harvest has finally been reaped. Two driving organic grooves, littered with lush synths and twirling sounds, pure Copycow gold of outstanding quality planted by our very own Timboletti.

As usual, this time we have two absolute experts to take care of the refinement of the harvest. El Mundo boils "Kava" down into a wonderfully dubby reduced soup flavoured with lots of love and plenty of room for mental digressions. Breger's approach is basically similar, but much more radical. The result is a wonderfully twisted trip to the beach with friends. Relaxing, satisfying, the best thing a Sunday or fun day can be.
