Next up on Balearic Ensemble is the first off two outings by Claptrap label boss Vanity Project, kicking of proceedings via a double-sider of synth-laden cosmic funk with luminaries Joe Morris and Romain FX on remix support. File under Italo / cosmic / balearic!
Smart midtempo cruiser ‘Multi Level Music’ sets the tone with a low-slung 303 roll, propelled along by congas and discrete piano house stabs, soaring leads and subtle vocoder charm. The ideal summer build-up track to orient the dance. Second track ‘Ponzi’ is an emotional 80s cruiser, going wide with shimmering pads and big 707 toms. An italo dream sequence evoking the golden age of the flamboyant discoteque, ready for deployment on your local dancefloor.
On the remix front Joe Morris sends out a sleek, shuffling version of Ponzi, bringing his maven drum work and trim low-end production for a deep space excursion into uncharted territories, and Fauve Records torchbearer Romain FX sends off the release with his version of Multilevel Music, playfully arranging sampled choral chops and octave keys to whirl and spin its way into a spiritual balearic crescendo.

As its name suggests, "California Wang" is a joyful mix of cosmopolitan musical influences, ranging from surf music to traditional Asian melodies, including reggae and acid house.

Captain Mustache (Kompakt, Bedrock,...) delivers a hypotonic and captivating remix of the song. For its part, Vantage (Neoncity Records,...) offers a funky version in homage to the OSTs of 90s video games.

Double Trouble

PREMIERE: Dombrance - Cope (François K Remix) [Discolypso]

Waving between Rio de Janeiro and Paris, Brazilian producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Diogo Strausz has been for quite some time, despite the tender age, carving his name in stone amidst the most interesting “tupiniquim” artists when it comes to delivering high-quality Jazz-Funk-and-Samba-embedded themes. Little wonder that important multi-genre artists, such as JKriv, Castello Branco, and Alice Caymmi, to name a few, have already collaborated with the young virtuoso.

What defines Diogo’s sonority? Imagine Azymuth, Marcos Valle, Tim Maia, Deodato, and Cassiano, together, brainstorming, jamming, experimenting... The result would be something we have heard before – especially during the vibrant Carioca scene of the 1970s, right? But fast forward to the 2000s and here it comes Strausz's modern touch with shards of Disco, bits of Electronica, and a pinch of Acid.

His brand-new album lives up to its name: "Samba From Outer Space", coming soon in vinyl and digital formats on the French label Goutte d'Or Records, delivers seven and eleven tracks, respectively. The difference: The solid remixes by Voilaaa, Jex Opolis, and JKriv will not be available on the hard copy, unfortunately.

Premiered here, "Why Can't We Be Together" is a zero gravity experience with its Cosmic Balearic atmosphere and soothing vocals. The Samba gait allied with Jazzy fragments result in a compelling and entrancing theme.

Diogo is coming to the old continent for a tour this Spring, by the way. France, Germany, and the UK on the itinerary. Stay tuned!

PREMIERE598 // Diogo Strausz - Why Can't We Be Together

MEANT RECORDS welcomes accomplished Parisian producer TIM PARIS for an EP that features three standout originals and two brilliant remixes from COSMO VITELLI and SONNS.
Over a glittering career, TIM PARIS has of course collaborated with Ivan Smagghe, run his own Marketing Music label and turned out a diverse album, ‘Dancers’, for My Favorite Robot and 'We Us', for Ekleroshock.
From jacking electro to rugged new wave via freaky house, he has a fully formed palette that is distinguishable by his raw sense of groove and texture.
First up here, PARIS works with Telemark on ‘Version A’, seven sizzling minutes of macho robot funk. Whirring synths, twisted bass and chunky drums all get you up on your toes and are sure to inject the crowd with wild spirit. French touch genius and I’m A Cliche label boss Cosmo Vitelli steps up to remix and brings more punk spirit to a slap-funk track with booming kicks and brain frying chords. It drips with cool and dark libido and is sure to become a real anthem.
PARIS’s second masterful original, ‘Version B’, features Sex Judas and has a metallic and melodic bassline that runs round the scales in off kilter fashion. Sci-fi pads and bright stabs all add colour to this dystopian disco track
as it bumps along and sweeps you up.
Remixer SONNS and his seriously accomplished discography on labels like Kompakt and ESP Institute is next on duty. He flips the track into a loose, flabby chugger with tons of reverb on the guitar lines and spooky synths
that wither and wilt. It’s tough disco of the sort that brought magic in Andrew Weatherall and Ivan Smagghe sets when the wax got released.
With the brand new ‘Version C’, PARIS gets back to his first love and gets as close as he can get to the music that brought him to our ears, several years ago now: some kind of a dirty deep house infused in DJ Koze's
beats, made strongly addictive with the enhanced vocal all along the track and a tension at it's highest.
This is a fantastic five tracker of gritty machine disco.

Tim Paris - Version A Ft Telemark (Cosmo Vitelli Remix) [Meant]

The two friends, Bruce the bat person and Vector Malevolent, combine their talents to deliver an explosive EP released on the Epicure Records label on March 27th.

At the heart of this EP lies the original track "Mé en Té", a bold creation that defies the conventions of cosmic dark disco, inviting both dance and introspective journeys.

"Mé en Té" is much more than just a musical track; it's a sensory experience where every note, every beat, transports the listener into a fascinating parallel universe. The composition is filled with surprises, including the unexpected arrival of a trumpet solo that enriches the sonic texture and adds palpable warmth to the whole.

Alemao, with his cosmic and euphoric vision, chooses to remove the trumpet to create an even more immersive atmosphere.

Cosmosolar, on the other hand, opts for an ultra-club remix, skillfully blending hypnotic acid sounds for an unforgettable dance experience.

F.U.R.O. takes us on an epic journey, slower but equally captivating, evoking almost the epic battles of Final Fantasy game.

Giorgio Isaev, meanwhile, offers a dark and rave remix, evoking the feverish atmosphere of Berlin warehouses in the early hours.

Finally, Nick Hanzo closes the show with his signature rhythmic and transporting beats, adding an extra dose of raw energy and irresistible groove to this already impressive collection.

PREMIERE : Bruce The Bat Person & Vector Malevolent – Mé En Té (Nick Hanzo Remix)[Epicure Records]

Based in the Netherlands, Doctr signs here his very first release with Mélopée. A heterogeneous EP of 4 original tracks mixing its influence, sensitive and complex. A haunting musical edifice where the groove and fabulous melodies tell the story of a third kind encounter.

"First Contact" is a powerful Italo banger.
The track is definitively efficient, strong and takes off in an epic way when the melody comes.

The piece "Please take me with you" can't be explained, it can be listened to. Slow speed, captivating pad and lead, let's go for the goose bumps.

With "Peace, No peace", it's time to fight it out on the dancefloor.
The Italorave song is fast, uncompromising, unfolding a frantic rhythm.

The last original sound "Where Do We Go From Here" seems to be about hop after conflict. A splendid Italo tune perfectly cuttted to close the party.

After having remixed Panthera, it's now Panthera who takes care of giving one for Doctr. He signs here a fantastic and rolling story, inpired by 80s atmospheres. As per usual, the audience is transported, eyes closed, smile on the lips : thrills guaranteed.

To close the release, we welcome again the talented Valerj for the second remix. He gives to "Where Do We Go From Here" a darker and more progressive touch, where the tension keeps building over and over again. Awesome !

Matteo Mussoni and Nicola Zucchi were raised on the disco romance of the 1970s and early 80s. Channelling their shared love of music machines and mirrorballs, the duo founded Sparkling Attitude. Their debut EP draws on the magic of italo disco, the synthesizer soundtracks of the silverscreen and the open stretches of the Italian coastline. “Dov’eri Sabato Sera” recounts the tale of unrequited love; youth, possibility and dashed hopes play out to a crisp rhythm and wistful melodies. Those heart-strained notes then take the limelight for the instrumental version, analogue strings soaring to impassioned heights. The flames keep burning on the flip with “Melodico Romantico”. Disco infused, bold and brazen beats are made-up in dark rouges and effervescent greens as breathy vocals whisper. Mussoni and Zucchi dive deep into their machines for the curtain close. Inspired by Japanese culture, made in Italy, daring key stabs and astral echoes are draped in a late-night groove for this glittering finale. Joyous sounds from a Sparkling Attitude.

Barcelona’s Anbau (Aspecto Humano) debuts on Bordello with a Giro d’Italia themed EP. Dedicated to its heroic riders and specifically the late Marco Pantani. He broke through in 1994, winning one of the hardest Giro climbs with an incredible time record; the Passo del Mortirolo. He eventually became second in the final rankings of this legendary tour of Italy.

The release will be out on the 4th of May, kicking off the 108th edition of La Corsa Rosa. Every copy comes in a limited edition sleeve with a unique and rare original Merlin collector’s sticker of the 78th Giro from ’95.

King of Kings EP is a reminiscence of a period (1980 - 1991), prior to the economic liberalization of India. A closed economy with nearly 200% tariffs or outright bans on all foreign electronic equipment’s including synthesizers, sequencers, drum machines and computers due to west’s antagonizing behavior towards India for not opening its market for foreign colonial corporate actors.

This did not deter musicians to get their hands on the machines despite all the stumbling blocks placed in front of them. Defiance and persistence gave birth to Indian acid and electro synth pop created under our own terms becoming not only father of the machines once we couldn’t own but with our playful ragas giving birth to genres such as acid house.

India thus opened another node in the global cultural flows of electronic music. Cumulatively, this period contributed to the triumph of import substitution in cultural production. An attitude was born to why import when we can make it on our own. A major shift in a mind colonised and slaved for 400 yrs.

This an honest attempt to show the world, how Indian musicians undeterred by barriers made their own mark with western synthesizers and drum machines while staying true to their ethnic identity. A period of Computer Love.

“King of Kings” which translates literally from Tamil (Rajadhi Raja) is a true endeavor to demonstrate to the world how Indian musicians have overcome racial and political boundaries to achieve their sonic mission of expressing our artistic autonomy filled with purpose, perseverance and avant-garde excitement. A musical piece that aims to represent the idea, “In order to become who you are, you need to first overcome who it is they said you are”. A true King of Kings.
