This type of set is one I adore playing, but don’t often have the occasion to, neither fully ambient nor for the dancefloor ~~ a fluid liminal zone of flickering rhythms and shimmering tones. A glowing meditation to cleanse and clarify 💠

The Mudd Show ~ 30.11.24

Continuum: a coherent whole characterized as a collection, sequence, or progression of values or elements varying by minute degrees.

We land for the seventh time in a new musical planet in our trip through The Continuum. And you better get ready for the adventures Javier Marimon has prepared for you as the host of his sonic world in the form of a live set.

A storyteller like no other, Javier's creative output flows in many directions. You will find his music creations in many labels like Crescent London, Kizen, Huinali, Accents, Oslated, Secuencias Temporales... and also on his own imprint Off Tangent. He has performed at some of our favourite events including Mostra, Perpendicular, La Nature or La vallée électrique. If that does not already seem busy, his visual art has found it's way to numerous other labels and identities for events and festivals. It is probably impossible to count the number of notebooks filled with his artistic sketches, and lately, his sculptures are taking over his feed.

His work always invites the listener (or viewer) to take part. His, as he would say, 'proudly sketchy' approach puts the receiver in a participant role rather than a witness. His whimsical craft demands attention and often will get you building universes. His inspired sound inspires, and the energy he embeds his art with is contagious; an energy of curiosity, with a childlike wish for filling the gaps. You are all invited to Javier's game.

And his adventure for The Continuum comes, as we mentioned, in live set format. A man and a sampler. Javier builds with his SP404 a musical collage of soundscapes, distant and abstract rhythms, mysterious melodies, and a dose of subaquatic dub. All of it with his signature dose of mischief, and very proudly sketchy. Recorded somewhere in Shizuoka in Japan.

The Continuum: Javier Marimon

It was my first Draaimolen and no one knew it which was great. 
It was also my first encounter with Addit Audio and their sound system installed for the first time in its full glory. I can't recall being brought to tears during one soundcheck.
So there were no news, no algorithms, no expectations to be disappointed. The pit was not announced. It felt like a curious manifestation of something paranormal.
Wonderful sound system, records and sweetest weather.  
Those who found us in the small pit in the middle of the forest most likely didn't know what was going on. 
For the most part of the first 5 hours I figured out that it would be great to play for and with the sound guy, playing right and wrong records and figuring out which one sound good. Research and development mission for Addit Audio.
After 5 hours ISAbella joined for a brief back to back session. Everything can happen in the realm of paranormal. Luckily she stayed and we played together for the next 3 hours until the last song, the one for the deceased. Probably as close as it gets to transcendence.

@syberkid creates a journey through the flames, leaving us with the burning embers of an eclectic mix of drone and ambient harmony. This was recorded live at the ‘Burning of The Clavie’ at MKII in London, on January 11th 2025.

This artwork is a collaboration between Sybil, Adam, and Mark, creating cymatics of sonic experimentation, and with each installment of the series, we will explore turning a fraction of sound into light. 🎨

An episode that feels well overdue yet thoroughly worth the wait! A titan of the Naarm underground music scene, Pjenné has been a kindred spirit and longtime pal since the early days of MDC, and it's no surprise that her contribution is packed full of gloriously deep and immersive feels, bassy and driving in parts and light as a feather in others, speaking to a palette that has been meticulously explored and continues to evolve along with her incredible weekly radio show on PBS, Passing Notes.

Q. What sounds of feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in?

A. For this mix, I wanted to channel the energy and sounds that I associate with Melbourne Deepcast rather than drawing on the darker side of my sound palette that has been at the fore of my radio and club sets of late. MDC means so many things to me, but there’s definitely an energetic, grooviness that comes to mind and this is what inspired the mix. Although the mix does showcase parts of me (heavily atmospheric, emotive and a few downtempo tracks for good measure), I’d say this is more of a mix for you. :) I imagine this mix being listened to outside, on a sunny day, but when you might also need a little extra pep in your step. 

Q. Are there any songs in the mix that are especially close to your heart, and what is it about these tracks that resonate with you so much?

A. The first that came to mind is a track by Sean Cusick and Medway (Jesse Skeens) - It is an incredibly beautiful and emotive breakbeat track from 2002 on Saw recordings, there’s just something about how the vocals and the pads wash over you - although its upbeat there's also a sombreness to it and I just think its the whole package. 

Towards the end of the mix there’s also a very very classic ambient trance number, Lazer Worshippers by Damon Wild & Tim Taylor from 1993 - Not the most deeply dug track but it's a classic for a reason.

Q. You have been lovingly broadcasting your weekly radio show Passing Notes on PBS for six years running, which is a serious achievement! Tell us what you did for your sixth anniversary on International Women's Day, and what keeps you inspired to broadcast the show week in week out?

A. It’s been a wild ride that’s for sure! I really appreciate that International Women’s Day marks each yearly anniversary of Passing Notes - it reminds me to stop and reflect on each year as an achievement that I would probably otherwise forget in the chaos of life. This year I enlisted the help of Syrian DJ and Harmony Rec affiliate Zeynep, who provided an excellent, playful and sassy celebratory guest mix. 

As for my inspiration to keep going, I’d say that I draw from the collective power of electronic artists locally as well as internationally. There’s just so much good music to share, and Passing Notes enables me to provide a crucial connection between ‘underground’ electronic music and the wider music community. I'm also inspired by live radio as a format - it provides a sanctuary for me from the highly curated nature of music today and allows me to be more playful in the way that I explore different sounds. To me it is a place free of judgement.

We are so excited to welcome Melbourne- based dj, radio host, curator and label head @pjenne to our mix series. 

Pjenne is at the forefront of the Aussie underground scene, a true visionary! Her sound takes many forms and genres but she crafted a unique style that is very much of her own. If you haven’t already listened to her beautifully curated radio show/mix series Passing Notes we highly recommend.  

 “This mix is a live recording of (most of) my set at @terra-obscura-london in London in April last year. I played from 12-2am after Slowfoam and before Oma Totem Live - a time in the night where Ormside projects was transformed from 'soft furnishings' to club. I think the mix represents the music I played a lot across my tour last year (and probably won't stop playing), with an additional emotional sprinkle that was inspired by the work of @avsluta and @aliciasteanson. <3”

Contributing our latest episode is London’s ANNX, a regular figure within the city’s cutting-edge undercurrent whose many contributions include co-curation of the Whomp, Perspectives, and once-shrouded Magick events, and a residency at the beloved Above Below festival. Anna’s tireless dedication to the scene goes hand-in-hand with her unmistakable talent behind the decks, as evidenced by an impressive repertoire of mixes and set recordings, and which I was fortunate enough to witness first-hand last summer in the Chilterns. Here Anna demonstrates her well-honed craft over the course of two meticulously plotted hours, diving seamlessly into manifold forms of deep, heavy psychedelia before emerging in a wave of euphoric bliss.
