Built on the tenets of weirdo southern hip hop and east-leaning instrumentation, Swiss producers Modulaw have come correct over the past few months with a host of harmonically beatific, noisy rap refixes, taking on everyone from Migos to Lil Debbie and even producing an EP for Zurich-based MC Boeystraat. Their entry to the SMBDL series is a menacing instrumental build around a series of swirling string work and an overlay of yelps, screams and blasts of unadulterated noise. It's urban club music at its finest and by the time Modulaw finds their four-on-the-floor stride midway through the track, the effort already feels monumental.

DJAO - Lights Off (SMBDL013)

Seattle’s DJAO, also known by his Club alias 7777777, reignites the Symbols Singles Series with “Lights Off”, utilizing repetition and a familiar sample to push the listener firmly out of their comfort zone. A singular drone, mechanical breathing and Lil Jon’s bracing chants make up the backbone of the track, managing a disorienting dragging effect even as sharp snares form a marshall beat. It’s a foreign zone to most, but one that is ultimately rewarding.

Building on a wealth of previous work, both released via the ONE EIGHT HUNDRED label and a series of self-releases, “Based” is both immediately gratifying and intricately detailed, grafting pristine instrumentation and warm weather-ready samples onto exactly the sort of gravelly percussion we’ve come to expect from the bleeding edge of club music.

The latest DISPLAY split tape sees two exciting artists construct ice-cold ambience in a pair of sprawling cinematic pieces.

Laura Luna Castillo crafts a tense surrealist soundscape on “Things Have Started To Float”. The eerie and engaging piece steadily amasses and dissolves structure with a blend of droning mid-tones and creaking metallic hits all while a menacing bass pulse lurches forward. This distinct tension creates a cinematic feeling ultimately evoking a subtly whirling electronic mass frozen in time.

The flipside of the tape sees Lensk engaging in more structural experimentation on “Light (As It Shone Through Cracking Ice)”. The tundral composition slowly evolves from delicate ambient meditations and narrative glimmers to blistering wall-of-sound sonics. Closing with razor-sharp growls eventually fading back into more delicate, nocturnal hymns. A fitting final bow for the release.

The first DISPLAY split tape of 2020 finds Avbvrn and Evitceles taking a painterly approach to heavy-weight sonics.

Avbvrn’s “Austerity” skips through patchy urban environments while dark subterranean rhythms dance in and out of frame below. Occasionally focusing in on tight, micro synth murmurs before returning to eyes-down bass workouts, the piece gives an introspective look at the weight of a bustling outside environment.

On “White Lion”, Evitceles expands upon these cinematic themes but with a much wider lens. The pensive yet hulking epic finds orchestral pads dancing with hard hitting bass stabs, evoking the feeling of a monolithic structure finding life. A slow burner that ultimately culminates in other-worldly pastoral hymns, “White Lion” closes out the release in a cleansing fashion.
