You won’t know
Death

Its Meaning, The saying suggests 
that the fear of death, 
or the understanding of its inevitability, 
is a concept we can only truly grasp 
at the moment of death itself.

Its Origin, It is a witty twist 
on the traditional Irish saying,
‘May you be in heaven 
half an hour before the devil knows you're dead," 
which blesses someone 
with a long life that takes them to heaven 
before death's final moment.

Contrast to Biblical Texts say.
The phrase is distinct 
from the biblical concept of, 
“the gates of hell" .
in Matthew 16:18, 
which refers to the powers of death 
and evil 
not prevailing against the Church. 
It is a modern phrase 
rather than a direct religious teaching about the afterlife.

It implies 
that true understanding of death's finality only comes 
at the very end of life, 
or upon entering the afterlife. 
The expression is often used 
in a lighthearted, ironic, or poignant way to comment 
on the unknown nature of death.
