Swede Peder Mannerfelt makes music that is hard to categorise. And whether producing for Fever Ray and Blonde Redhead or serving up albums and EPs on Archives Intérieures and Hinge Finger, he is fiercely inventive. From experimental tribal concept music like his The Swedish Congo Record to the disassembled and goth-tinged techno rhythms of his latest, Controlling Body, he always pushes boundaries in bold new ways. He is an artist who likes to forget what he knows and go with his instincts, and it has resulted in a body or work that is truly beguiling. 

His mix for our series is just as esoteric. It is a two hour collage that starts of as a voodooistic brew of shamanistic rituals, abstract noise and kinked techno that takes you to a dark foreign world. From there there are some more traditional passages of drum rhythms and wild machine-made sounds as well as diversions into plenty more uncategorizable sonic spheres thanks to tracks from the likes of Pinch, Errorsmith, Vatican Shadow, Machine Woman, Umfang and tens more. It’s music as warfare, as cinema, as experimentation, and it sounds like nothing else out there.

One of the greatest things about 2019 for us was bringing Annie Hall into the Natural Selection family. After booking her as a guest at our 2nd FOLD event in May 2019, alongside Scan 7, Developer, The Exaltics and our residents Kodah and Voicedrone, we knew we had to form this special unification immediately. Annie has played at every Natural Selection event since, often playing back to back and thus forming a reputable musical bond with our co-founder Kodah, and she has shown overwhelming passion and commitment to what we do. 

Born and bred in Madrid, now based in Barcelona, Annie also spent a long period living close to Detroit which allowed her to forge close ties with the music community there. She has been at the forefront of underground Electronic Music for over a decade and her being signed to mammoth labels such as Central Processing Unit and Detroit Underground is fully testament to that. With a longterm passion for music and a love of experimenting with new sounds, Annie isn’t constrained by boundaries, which is one of the reasons why she has slotted in perfectly with our musical ethos. She has also released on other heavyweight labels such as Flash Recordings and Semantica and her latest work, released in March 2020, again came courtesy of Sheffield giants Central Processing Unit. In recent years Annie has also played at Sonar Festival, Detroit Movement Festival and Dommunie in Tokyo. 

To have such an esteemed artist with us on the Natural Selection frontline is an absolute honour and we are proud to be able to present to you her exclusive FUSE mix.

Tempestfeather is the electronic music act of Berlin-based writer and creative Liz Marchetti. As a DJ, her sound was conceived in Cairo, shaped in London, and refined in Berlin. Drawing on her diverse range of influences, she likes to mix and blend genres that lean towards a leftfield and bass-heavy sound.

She said of this mix: “It showcases my penchant for the deeper and darker end of the electro spectrum, with a nod to the UK’s breaky and dubby sounds I love. Coincidentally (or synchronistically?), this set connects the dots between my present and past hometowns of Berlin and London. I featured local Berlin producers Parand, Scarlit Port, and Volruptus; as well as UK-based talents Sync24, T-Flex, and Etch. To tie it up, there's a track by fellow Italian artist GAJA too. Geographical ties aside, I’d like to think it’s pretty danceable :)

For our 16th episode, we are ecstatic to have our first Montreal-based artist join in on the series. @c-m-d is a Montreal-based DJ, producer and host of the program Modular Systems on CKUT 90.3 FM.

her studio. She's been creating her unique brand of electronics since 2012, pushing out beautiful noise, from the delicate to the jarring. She is resident of NYC-based Lost Soul Enterprises, host on The Lot Radio and curator of Bossa Nova Civic Club’s Techno Support Group party. Her highly lauded live hardware performances and vinyl-heavy dj sets have cemented her own place among NYC’s techno community and beyond.
