Enigma - Relaxing ambient drone music (Roland JX-10 / Super JX analog synth)

This track came about over a period of time, adding little riffs of piano and finally, Simon creating an electronic 'ground'. It's a bit of a collage. I wondered if it was going to work at all. Now, I like it.

I’ve been listening to a lot of dark, deep, and experimental sounds throughout the years, but somehow they are all that much appropriate these days, as our moods shift from the positive outlook of the future, into the doom, gloom, and the end of days. I won’t reflect on things that have been said before or are currently being said, reviewed, rehashed ad nauseam, on every single outlet with a view. Until there is new information, there is no point in using words to reassess. Instead, let’s turn to music that speaks louder than the rest. Today I am premiering a track by Chicago-based Michael Vallera taken off his third upcoming album on Denovali, titled Window In due to be released on April 24th, 2020. This is a drony, dense, and tasty record, full of dynamic tension, movement, and expanse. “Raw studio recordings of the electric guitar were taken as the foundation, then heavily altered and manipulated through sampling, erasing the trace back to the origin of the sound.” A fitting track for gripping times.

"A conversation with my brother Jordan Christoff created this mix. First we were talking about Vaporwave and also stretching sound, then as often we were talking about Bulgaria, the Balkans and music, then Chalga came up. I also remembered some Yugoslavian pop tracks that were super beautiful and tragic which featured in the excellent film The Load, by Ognjen Glavonić, a very important piece of cinema about the complexities around the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, this film is a must watch for anyone living in a member state of the NATO alliance. I watched that film with my father also, that was a very moving experience. For this mix I reworked some tracks from the Balkans, below are the names of the original songs, in no particular order, you won't be able to hear them directly in the mix, this is drone reimagination. Thanks for listening, Stefan Christoff."

BIO

While I appreciate music in many genres, I’ve always had a love for electronica… especially ambient, chillout and IDM, likely due to artistic influences in my youth (see “Influences” here: http://synth4ever.com/about-synthever/influences ).

It all started around age 6 when I first heard works done by a Japanese synthesist/composer named Isao Tomita. My parents had bought 3 of his records (Kosmos, The Planets, and The Bermuda Triangle) at a garage sale because the cover artwork “looked cool”.

Little did I know (at the time) that he was a major pioneer in the electronic & analogue synth music scene. When listening to his material, I often dream of soundscapes, distant planets and other such far-away places, and I think my early exposure to his music influenced me for the rest of my life towards a “space ambient” style.

I took piano lessons at a young age for a brief time, but then focused on drumming from age 12. Still, over the years my interest and love for electronic music grew until the point of finally purchasing my first synthesizer in January 2012. Since then I have developed a voracious appetite for all things synth.

DEMOS & MUSIC
======

When it comes to my synth demos,  I try to showcase what I’ve learnt about the synths I own thus far, and to share with others my love for these synths. I prefer the spontaneity of live performance and hands-on, real-time tweaking of the synth itself.

I like to play music in a more “space ambient” style comprised of long sustained pads, arpeggiators, resonance, reverbs and delay. I find this style allows me great freedom to tweak a synth’s various parameters, play with effects to create new sounds, and create emotional soundscapes that are pleasing to my ear and which take me (and hopefully, the listener) on an emotional journey through electronic music.
