This week’s guest artist, Funkanizer (aka Mike Pal), comes to us all the way from Greece. Mike’s first foray into music was as a bass player and for the last three years he has been making his mark on the international Ghetto Funk scene from his native Athens. His latest EP, Groove Gigolos a co-production with S Strong on Scour Records, has been a huge success. And if you scour the Internet for quality bass driven music like we do, then you know Mike’s work is supported by some of the best bass music blogs around including Ghetto Funk (Spinforth’s Scour), HongKongPingPong and Free Breaks Blog just to name a few. For his appearance in The Armory this week, Mike has all of the four major food groups well represented (ghetto funk, glitch hop, breakbeat and drum and bass) in this fabulous 55-minute mix set. We asked Stereo:Type about the process of making this mix, and here is what he had to say:

"When you're commissioned to make a mix for DJ Shadow, you know you have to pull something special out of the bag. Making sure it was a musical experience was as much a key part of this as making it a hype mix to listen to, considering you are working with material by a guy whose process involves finding sounds which work together as though they were made for one another. When i was approached to do this, I was asked to make the mix using material either sampled by, or remixed for or by Shadow. So Instead of making it a straight up one track into another kind of mix, I tried to approach it like a live performance, deconstructing tracks into their component parts then re-assembling and combining them with my own take on it. I certainly hope people have as much of a blast listening to it as i did making it."

Solid Steel (26th April) After last week's frantic session, it's a more laid back affair all round as we welcome Mixmaster Morris in Hour 1 for our 25th Anniversary slot. His history with Solid Steel goes back to the early days when he would often sit in for Coldcut on Kiss FM, alongside his own show The Chill Out Zone. He is also responsible for producing arguably one of the best remixes for Coldcut, with the classic Irresistible Force Full Chill Mix of 'Autumn Leaves' and productions on Rising High and Ninja Tune. We open with Robert Glasper, the wonderful Letherette remix for Bibio and tracks from Romare, Cid Rim and Oriol. Plus there's music from Lapalux, Fatima, Floating Points Ensemble and closing on the Idjut Boys remix for Smith and Mudd.
