This is the final version I'm doing. All sounds were programmed and played by me on synthesizers and bass guitar.... I don't own a tambourine though, and couldn't get my vocals to sit right so both of those things will be absent.

Cars (Gary Numan cover)

This is, I must say, one of the most funkiest songs I've ever written! I'm very pleased with it and it was quite spur-of-the-moment. I have Aly-James Lab to thank! 

I just bought Aly's amazing new Linn LM-1 plug in (yeah, as in the funkiest drum machine ever) and was playing it by hand when I layed down a good beat. No computer aid, no quantization, just me looping and multitracking a beat I played BY HAND. Who needs a sequencer? The Linn LM-1's greatest strength was in its low-resolution 48ppq clock which gave it a human type feel..... I can do that to!

Anyway, the rest is all Sonic Projects OP-X Pro II..... how else would I get that early 80s Minneapolis funk without the sound of an Oberheim? As soon as I played that bass sound over the Linn, I was like "Shit..... that's too funky to pass up, I'd better develop this!" Lo and behold, I give to you, the FUNK!!!!

Oh, MAN!

This was so much fun to recreate! I started with a simple LM-1 pattern, courtesy of Aly James's great VLinn plug in, then the rest was SonicProjects' OP-X Pro II. I was actually surprised at how closely I was able to recreate the sounds from the original song. Men Without Hats were big Prophet-5 users (who wasn't?) but they also used a Yamaha CS-50 for strings and tinny synth sounds........ 

I was able to do both on the OP-X Pro II!!!!!

Everything was done with Tal's Uno-62LX (v2) which is a perfect emulation of the famous Roland Juno-60 synthesizer. The only other instrument was a kick from the Linn LM-1.

This is probably the best cover I've done in a long, long time! This is Laura Branigan's "Self Control" done entirely on the KORG Minilogue, save for the 808 and electric guitar. 

Beyond that, the Minilogue did everything! The original song was done using a Roland TR-808, Jupiter-8 and a SynDrum for the snares, layered over the 808 for added punch. I did the same thing here!!!!!

Any Simple Minds fans here? Well, I've got a treat for you! I had a lot of fun working on this one all morning. I used the Studiologic Sledge 2.0 for all sounds, except drums which was Addictive Drums 2. I think I nailed the synth parts, and the guitars were plucky/chugging synths run through a Marshall amp simulator. All other effects like phasers, flangers, chorus and what not came from the Sledge as well. It's my favorite synthesizer!

Here we go, everyone! It's the intro title song from Blade Runner, composed by Vangelis. Obviously, he mainly used the mighty Yamaha CS-80 for the majority of the film's score, but I used the Sledge 2.0 to recreate it..... all of the sounds you hear were created on JUST the Sledge.

Just What I Needed - Cover

I did a cover of this song years ago, and another one years before that, but I've never been satisfied with any of them...

Until now, that is!

THE MAKING OF:
This was one of the most difficult covers I've ever recorded, and it took me 3 days to get right! Anyway, for those who are interested, here's how I did it all. 

DRUMS:
The drums are a complete reconstruction of the original track which took me 2 hours to finish. The extended version of the original song starts with a few bars of isolated drums before the "Hey, hey, hey!" part. I looped the main bars right from that extended version, and also sampled the kick and snare so I could play some parts manually on the keyboard. The snare solo at the end of the song was done by hand using said samples! Other samples were actually lined up the old fashioned way in Audacity; it was rather laborious at times, but I kept going.

BASS GUITAR:
I recorded the bass with my Studiologic Sledge 2.0 synthesizer, of which, I programmed some really authentic sounding bass guitar patches. It's a bit of a tough bass line to play given the fact that it's entirely in triplets..... and you really have to practice to be able to do that for almost 5 minutes ON A KEYBOARD. The way I play stuff like that is with my thumb and index finger for the one key. I suppose you could play the triplets using just one finger, but I find that adding your thumb makes for more dynamic playing control!

ELECTRIC GUITAR:
Since I've been recording my own songs, I have always needed electric guitar! The problem? I can't play guitar AT ALL. So, using my Memorymoon ME80, (Yamaha CS-80 vst)I programmed a ton of basic, guitar-ish sounding patches, before running the ME80 through various amplifier simulations to drive and distort the sound! Yup. The real ball-buster is that muted rhythm guitar during the verses, because they too are played in fucking triplets! This was more than my thumb and index could handle, so I cheated! How? Simply put a delay effect over the sound and program the delay time to echo in 16ths! You play the sound in 8ths, but set the delay volume to be 50/50 dry/wet, this way you're PLAYING 8ths, but HEARING 16ths. 

PIANO:
Simple Minds, like so many touring bands in the 80s, used a Yamaha CP-80 Electric Grand piano for its ease of transportation, reliability, and sound. I love the CP-80 sound, because it's so much brighter and clear than an acoustic piano; that, and you can run it through all manner of effects pedals with ease! Thus, I played the Addictive Keys 2 plug-in with the CP-80 pack smeared in a rich chorus effect!

OTHER:
The choir during the bridges were made using a freeware Mellotron vst, run through (you guessed it!) thick, ensemble-style chorus!
As for the rest of the track, I used the Sledge exclusively for all the synth parts. The original synthesizer used by Simple Minds for this song was an Oberheim OB-Xa, as seen in the music video as well as live performances. There might have been some Roland Jupiter-8 in there too, because I know that Mick MacNeil used both synths pretty heavily in those days! Anyway, I did it all on the Sledge!

VOCALS:
We're not going to talk about that. I like singing, but recording and mixing my voice is fucking nightmarish!

I just cobbled this together over a Linn LM-1 beat I made earlier for just such a track. The rest was made exclusively with Sonic Project's lovely OP-X Pro II synth, which, if you don't have it already, is the most authentic emulation of the original Oberheim OB-X available on the market!

My first finished recording since my mom passed away last June..... it's been really rough, but I got some inspiration and decided to bang one out! This song was made using the amazing Arturia MatrixBrute, driving a vintage Roland TR-626! The various samples were taken from the old 1950s educational video "Duck & Cover" and the 1983 TV movie "The Day After". Here's hoping I'm not slapped in the face with a bunch of copyright claims. That's the reason I didn't upload it YouTube, now that they're such assholes about it! Anyway.....

It's been a while since I've uploaded anything here, eh? Well, here's my newest original tune, "Life On A Möbius Strip" which I began writing earlier this year, and have finally gotten around to finishing! Huzzah! All synth sounds were made on the Sledge, drums from the lovely Aly James Lab V-Prom 2.0.
