Continuity #17 w/ Sand Circles (20/02/22)

Forest Kelley's debut album, Silt, is the culmination of a decade-long sonic realization of a singular vision: nematoda, annelida, and other abyssal worms inhabiting the aphotic depths, sensing each other without light. Living and cavorting amongst a carpet of compressed dust and organic matter, as unaware of our existence as we are of theirs. To create this 'soundscape ecology', Kelley began developing custom software in 2018. It allows for sounds to function as organisms: to be born, express themselves, change through friction with their world, and then dissipate, transcend, or die. Silt represents a snapshot of this world; the raw material for this particular instance includes guitar-based recordings dating from 2004 in collaboration with Jacob Uretsky. Through Kelley's exacting and intuitive selection of the results, we are presented with an ever-evolving selection of sounds. On their surface perhaps intersecting with ambient dub techno tropes, but Silt draws the listener ever deeper into the zone with its organically shifting textures and events.

Forest Kelley is an artist, electronic musician, and experimental composer based in Lexington, Kentucky. In 2018, he contributed music to the score for the Academy Award-nominated and Criterion Collection-selected documentary 'Hale County This Morning, This Evening ' along with composers Alex Somers and Scott Alario.

q. pls introduce yourself:

I’m James Gilbert, I make music under the name Petteril. It’s emotive, textural, electroacoustic music inspired by the complexities of the human condition, nature and the parallels between the two. A dying accordion, baritone guitar, clarinet, field recordings, electronics. I improvise, manipulate and process sound to craft narrative driven musical collages.

q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?

Every so often I feel compelled to make a mix. I don’t consider myself a DJ (at all!) but it harks back to the days of making mix tapes etc in college. Theres something calming and relaxing about it. There’s no real theme behind most of them, it’s just a way of collating and reorganising some of the music that I’ve been listening to recently. I enjoy doing it just for myself. Re-contextualising tracks by juxtaposing them with others that make sense. So this is just like a mixtape of bits I was listening to lots at the time of creating. Hopefully it helps people relax and go about their day.

q. in your opinion, what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?

One or multiple of the following: On a walk. Sat in a forest. On a beach. In the rain. Somewhere windy with sound cancelling headphones. In nature. Watching insects. Drinking a coffee early in the morning. Laying in bed late at night, in the dark. Extremes of day. Very early or very late.

q. describe a favorite object in your living room...

Might sound a bit boring, but the table. We have a 12ftx3ft table that I made years ago when we were renovating our house. It’s just a thin profile box metal frame, powder coated black with a heavy plywood top. But it’s the heart of everything in our house. It’s where I set up musical gear from time to time, it’s where I often work, it’s where my wife sews (she makes all her own clothes), it’s where my kids colour or do craft or playdoh and it’s where we eat as a family.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

Quite a lot. I have two finished releases in the pipeline, one of which is my debut album which has just been mastered and is currently being pressed to vinyl. It will be released late in year(ish) on a label I’m super excited about (can’t say too much yet!). And another project which is perhaps a little more experimental both musically and conceptually which I’m just finalising mixes and premasters for, ready to be sent off to get mastered and released on another of my favourite labels (again, can’t say too much at this point). They’ll probably both be coming out towards the end of the year. I’m also working on a long form piece which will be a bit more of a long term project. Trying to practice clarinet, guitar where I can too.
