We’re long term admirers of the The Orb here at Data Transmission; known for their assimilation of deepest dub into their stratospheric sonic innovations we were more than a little excited to receive news that they would be following up the release of their second ‘History Of The Future’ compilation with a new album for German techno institution Kompakt Records this summer.

Titled ‘Moon Building 2703 AD’ the album will follow up their 2005 LP ‘Okie Dokie It's The Orb On Kompakt’ with founding member Alex Paterson describing the work as “a solid piece of music that mutates into an eight legged lunar Land Rover and takes off into a cosmic horizon of a million sounds, patterns and textures. It spins the listener on his/her head, rewiring their brains to maximum capacity, then brings them home, sweet home.”

With their new album arriving June 22nd we thought there was no better time than now to welcome the seminal outfit to deliver a mix for the DT podcast and we're delighted to inform you that they most certainly haven't disappointed. Check. It. Out.

Recorded on the anniversary of JFK's assassination and 21 years after their historic '92 New Year mix on Kiss 100 FM, Coldcut meets The Orb inna Uptown Youth House for the Return Trip. Matt Black and Jonathan More alongside studio accomplice Dor Wand got suitably enhanced with Dr LX Paterson and Youth for a multi-player late night jam session lasting over 3 hours. They then entrusted the multitracks of the set to DJ Food who heroically edited, condensed and massaged the sprawling swamp of sound into a tight - but also loose - 2 hour Solid Steel session.

Swimming through the mix are Lee Perry, Killing Joke, Sun Ra, William Burroughs, Teebs, Ry Cooder, Actress, Prince Jammy, Iggy Pop, Monty Python, Hank Williams and Hal 9000. Alongside unreleased dubs from the players themselves, remixes and versions of tunes old and new, the complete track listing for this marathon set may never be fullly disclosed. It's 2 hours, 10 minutes of sonic secrets to melt your mind, probably best listened to in headphones late at night with all suitable facilities for the full effect. Enjoy this trip.

Café Seven, the new album from System 7’s Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy mixes 5 tracks from their chill-out project Mirror System with 5 more up tempo System 7 tunes, and features a System 7 collaboration with Marcus Henriksson (Minilogue / Son Kite) on ‘Million Suns' and a Mirror System collaboration with Ajja on ‘Smooth Operator’. SYSTEM 7's previous release - the Passion EP - really hits the spot, showing that in 2013 they remain on top of their game with their unique blend of trance and techno.

The most recent full System 7 album UP (released May 2011) tips the balance a bit in a more techno and tech house direction, still showcasing the unique System 7 sound with ultra modern production and a feeling of positivity. The album was inspired by time spent in Berlin. The club single, taken from UP, is PositiveNoise, a collaboration with Berlin-based A Guy Called Gerald, and features a new deep techno remix from Carl Craig and a powerful remix from Japanese techno star A.Mochi. PositiveNoise also has great new Japanese animation video clip

SYSTEM 7’s Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy have had a strong influence on the birth of psychedelic dance music and it’s journey up to the present, forging a unique and bang up-to-date identity on the genre map, in a space where techno, progressive and trance meet – with a healthy side-element of unique quality ambient chill which is connected and reflected in their sister project Mirror System. 

Since the beginning of the 90s System 7 projects have been marked by a series of high powered collaborations, working with Detroit luminaries Derrick May and Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, The Orb, Jam El Mar, Son Kite among others. System 7’s club singles have had outstanding remixes from the likes of Plastikman, James Holden and Dubfire, whose mix of Space Bird was number one on Beatport’s main chart for 2 weeks in 2008.
