SAL proudly presents our 2024 Lunar New Year Compilation, featuring a stellar lineup of artists including Kim Ann Foxman, Cora, Why Be, Soda Plains, River Moon, Ennio, and label founder Lawrence Lee. 🧧🐉🌟

The overarching theme that unites this compilation is the sense of nostalgia surrounding familial and ancestral connections 🪷🏞️. This theme holds a special resonance for many of us—some of whom experience it firsthand through their roots and homelands, while others grasp and feel it through the stories passed down to them. We’ve kept this theme open, allowing each artist the freedom to interpret and incorporate it into their music.

At the heart of SAL is our vibrant and supportive community, and this compilation serves to cultivate and share that sense of togetherness 🤲. We’ve brought together artists from diverse backgrounds across East and Southeast Asia, not only calling on close friends and collaborators but also forging new connections with talented individuals.

Manjumasi co-founder atish makes his long awaited bow on the production front with his very first solo EP in the form of two original cuts and remixes from Lee Jones and Dance Spirit. Peculiar Colors EP, the fifth release on the imprint, tows the party line in offering a refreshing electronic take across the board. Side A features Andy, music made by Superpitcher in memory and admiration of a pioneer artist and his works. Andy Warhol looks a scream, Hang him on my wall, Andy Warhol, Silver Screen, Can't tell them apart at all, Andy walking, Andy tired, Andy take a little snooze, Tie him up when he's fast asleep, Send him on a pleasant cruise, When he wakes up on the sea, Be sure to think of me and you, He'll think, about paint and he'll think about glue, What a jolly boring thing to do. David Bowie’s lyrics about Andy Warhol mirror the groovy yet deeply moving emotion of this track. The music Superpitcher imagined here is a pleasant cruise in itself and once you wake up from it, you will for sure think of Andy.

Side B features Yves. The track starts with a long introduction of harp music and then gently evolves into one of the more fragile and poetic pieces Superpitcher has created thus far for The Golden Ravedays record. Similar to Andy this track is dedicated to an artist, Yves Saint Laurent. What is clear in this music is that there is an intense understanding of the suffering Yves Saint Laurent lived throughout his life as an artist and fashion designer. As only Superpitcher can, he translated that emotion into this beautiful and touching piece of music.

Soul of Void is an electronic music project from St. Petersburg, Russia started by Alexey Izotov in 2017 to find his very own sound on a contemporary dance music scene. As art-director of Soul Kitchen he worked with many artists such as Tube and Berger, Phonique, Rafael Cerato, Edu Imbernon, Affkt, Nandu, Izhevski, Azamat, Moonwalk, Dashdot, Satin Jackets, Adana Twins, Balcazar and Sordo and many others.

He is focused on a certain ethnic sound in each track, preferring the eastern furrows and surreal sound textures of some of the old instruments of the Middle East, creating his own sets with harmonious designs and deep bass lines.

After a short period of work Soul of Void tunes are supported and played by Oliver Schories, Lane 8, Soul Button, Armen Miran, Darin Epsilon, Yoram, The Foreigners, George X, Kimball Collins, Marymoon, Niki Sadeki, Timboletti and many more all around the world, and music is released and forthcoming on KittBall, Submarine Vibes, Modern Day Music.

Swept away by Zigan Aldi. The ‘Odin’ EP brews with Souq Record’s traditional smoky desert flavours, evoked by Eastern instruments meeting electronica. Yet The EP is quick to cut through expectations and take a resolutely urban, robust direction: moody takeoffs, low rumbling vocals, a guitar’s singing electricity, heady bass-lines, and enveloping darkness. Odin flirts with melodic techno but never fully gives in to its calls, riding the tension between organic and electric.

Zigan Aldi debuts on Souq with this statement EP, infused with his two homes of Eastern Turkey and Berlin. His atmospheric narrative is three part: Odin rises, Heppnar strikes, Desert Hills simmers down. Three smouldering remixes by Iorie, Zuma Dionys and Namito land the story on softer tracks, completing the picture with elegance.
