Adam and filmmaker Michael M. Bilandic have been mutuals on social media for a little while now, but it wasn't until Mubi recently made Michael's films available on its streaming platform that Adam found himself burning through Michael's work and was thoroughly impressed. A frustrated artist exploits a rural horrorcore group in 'Hellaware', a raving delivery man accidentally kills a famous client in 'Jobe'z World', a performance artist locks himself in a cell as the Floyd riots rage outside in last year's 'Project Space 13'; while taking place in a tightly contained and well-crafted cinema universe, Michael's films mirror the reality of living in the contemporary culture industries to an uncanny degree.

Michael joins Adam and Will here to discuss not only his own films, but also Adam and Michael's shared love of Nick Zedd and the Cinema of Transgression, Michael's time working at legendary defunct East Village shop Kim's Video and Music, the crypto-transgression of Todd Phillips and 'Joker', and Bilandic's work with film art icon Abel Ferrara.

07 - DECODE - Strategy of Deception

Adam and Will are joined by New York-based artist and tattooer Will Sheldon. Will discusses his work with us: paintings and drawings of fantastical and fairy tale imagery but with a uniquely troubling and dark iteration fitting for our times. Will is also a tattooer and in contra to others working between the art world and tattoo culture (others typically tend to make clear distinction between the craft of tattooing and high art OR end up making tattooish art work) manages to create a clear communicative language between art and tattoos. We discuss this idiosyncrasy, Will's recent exhibitions, Will's recent collaborative book with British writer Charlie Fox, Hans Bellmer, and a shared appreciation for manga artist and filmmaker Hideshi Hino and Charlie Sheen's issues with Hino. (PREVIEW) Satanic Art Phag Propaganda (W/ Psyop Resistor)

In 1978, UK industrial and experimental music pioneers Nurse With Wound, then a collaborative effort between multiple musicians before Steven Stapleton would turn the project into his braintrust some years later, released its debut album Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella. That record, the title of which references an excerpt of Comte de Lautréamont's Les Chants de Maldoror, is one of the primary influences on all that which would later be known as industrial, experimental, or noise music from that point on. More important than the album, however, is its liner notes.

What has become known as the Nurse With Wound list was printed in the liner notes of the record: a list of over 200 avant-garde and outsider artists and groups that were influential on the development of Nurse with Wound in particular but that also can be used to historicize the avant-garde tendency in music writ large. From ground zero avant-rock like the Velvets to obscure European Jazz like Thrice Mice to pioneers of avant-garde composition like Karlheinz Stockhausen, the NWW list opens the floodgates to a new method of engagement with sound. 

In this episode, the boys invite Joey from the Easy Listening podcast to journey through the NWW list with all three of them finding three artists from it that appeal to their own sensibilities.

A Chance Meeting: NWW List (w/ Easy Listening)

Adam speaks with American harsh noise master Worth, aka William Van Gorder, who has a new record on White Centipede Noise called Sacred Violence Noise. Will recorded the album while on residency in Thailand, and throughout the conversation relays the experiences he had there and in his Southeast Asia journey more broadly. What is it like to make noise for an audience that has no fucking clue what is happening? MAGIC! Duh. 

Talking about Thailand and Southeast Asia leads these two artists to discussion of another shared interest: writer New Juche. Juche is also an artist who finds transcendence in beauty in abjection and decay – the decay of the Southeast Asian landscape, and the abjection in his own perverse sexual habits.
