Organismic synthesizer duo, hypnotic drone ambiant, granular massive noise 

It just takes a few steps to switch from grindcore to noise. Daniel - wicz and Loïc - olo, come from the underground, dusty roads and wet cellars. Both of them are originally bass players that went on their own ways in exploring electroacoustic and atonal music.

Their first encounter took place in the Vietnamese jungle at Dao Xuan Chin Festival in Hòa Bình. In the steaming tropical heat, surrounded by the sounds of multiple insects and reptiles, but also a 120dB roaring sound system, they decided to work together on the Lyra-8 by Soma. This iconic Russian synthesizer offers an organic and living approach to composition and improvisation.

Their approach to music is definitely powerful, contrasting, cinematographic and radical. A torrential storm turns into an industrial sonic blast confusing tropical and urban jungle, for a complex piece with crushed sounds in a deep drone.

Du grindcore à la noise, il n’y a qu’un pas. Daniel – wicz et Loïc – olo viennent de l’underground, des routes poussiéreuses, des caves humides. Tous deux, originellement bassistes, ont suivi des parcours parallèles dans les méandres de la musique atonale et électroacoustique.

Leur rencontre a eu lieu dans la jungle vietnamienne au festival Dao Xuan à Hòa Bình. Dans la chaleur tropicale, au détour des sons sauvages des insectes et des reptiles multiples, mais aussi d’une sonorisation vrombissante à 120db, ils ont décidé d’approfondir leurs travaux sur l’iconique Lyra-8 de Soma. Ce synthétiseur russe permet une approche organique et vivante de la composition et des improvisations. 

Le duo propose une musique de leur temps, puissante, contrastée, cinématographique et radicale. Une pluie diluvienne se transforme en attaque sonique industrielle, confondant jungle tropicale et urbaine, dans une pièce complexe aux sonorités concassées.

Construite à partir des poèmes du recueil Autoradio, la pièce sonore nous plonge dans un art du détail : feutres testés dans une papeterie, effacement de texte, beauté d’un index de fin d’ouvrage, ou l’incroyable virtuosité prosodique aux enchères de bétail dans l’Amérique profonde. La poésie de Carla Demierre fait cohabiter poésie concrète, minimalisme, légèreté et sampling décontextualisé. Avec l’addition de la musique, au tempérament calme, un peu flottant. Ou comment la réappropriation se fait réapproprier.

Headphones on! Binaural piece CHRONOVARIATIONS weaves together the haunting allure of the tenor saxophone with the limitless possibilities of electronic manipulation, superimposing avantgarde gestures onto minimalist ambient soundscapes. The record is rooted in notions of sonic resonance, temporality, and emergence, with the title of the work, CHRONOVARIATIONS, deriving from the concept of time and its transformation; timelessness, loss of temporal perception, and the decay of memory. The constantly-evolving chain of variations manipulates the perception of temporal reference points and envelops the listener.

"CHRONOVARIATIONS is a bold five-part composition that employs tenor saxophone, computer, resonating metal objects, and a space with a magnificent acoustic. The work challenges the conventional notions of form and structure, and utilises multiple dimensions of sound processing and augmentation. It calls for heightened engagement and active participation from the listener and, indeed, patience, but it’s a hugely rewarding and totally engulfing listening experience—these are musicians who are sculpting sound with virtuosic precision. CHRONOVARIATIONS feels like a conversation with time itself; where the past, present, and future collide and coexist."

Study on Overtones / Improvisation at Ställbergs Gruva was recorded during the May-June 2024 Ung Nordisk Musik composer residency at Ställbergs Gruva, an abandoned iron ore mine. Hartikainen was selected as Finland's representative composer for this residency, which held a theme of "Specificity+." Through site-specific explorations within the Örebro region, questions were asked about the location’s specificity: what significance does it have, to whom does it belong, and what is its relationship to change and transformation?

The recording took place in the old elevator machinery hall of the mine, which originally operated the first elevator that transported miners as deep as 500 meters, where they then switched to another elevator to descend further. The acoustics of the hall were extraordinary; the overtones resonated with astonishing brightness, inviting an exploration of harmonic resonances. With the hall's long reverb and natural support, even a solo saxophone could create walls of sound. Hartikainen's mastery of saxophone overtones made the improvisation sound polyphonic, creating a rich tapestry of sound that filled the space with complex, interwoven layers of melody and harmony, which eventually unraveled into a single note.

2021 ongoing project in collaboration with Eric Larrieux and the support of the Umwelt- und Gesundheitsschutz Zürich and Kuratorium Oekologie (ZHdK).

The air listening station is a cabin, where listeners can enter and experience a soundscape live streamed from the rooftop of Toni-Areal, sonically modified by the measures of the particles in the air, in the same location. Through this transformation, the public can experience the variations of those particles and get a sense for “Air Quality” via “Ear Quality”.

The process called ‘sonification’ allows the listener to hear data which is normally silent. In real time, we hear the changes of the respirable particulate matter (PM10), nitrogen oxides (NOX), ozone (O3) and ammonia (NH3), all assigned to specific sounds.

This project will allow us to contribute to a broader study on air quality measurement and world live sound mapping.

Currently living in Geneva – Switzerland – Daniel Maszkowicz (born Daniel Siemaszko) is at the same time a research scientist, a curator for independent cinema, and a multidisciplinary performer involved in several projects such as LE GRAND CHOEUR NOISE, SM NOISE, and CONFÉRENCE NOISE. Having worked at CERN – European Center for Nuclear Research – he collected numerous field recordings from the fantastic machines he come accros by wandering in the laboratories and abandoned tunnels.

His collaboration with artist Emma Souharce resulted in a massive installation of primitive analogue electronics called BIBLIOTEQ MDULAR, immersive hypnotic music created by an orchestra of obsolete laboratory function generators, often combined with analogue video modular synthesiser Synkie from collective [ a n y m a ] for an audiovisual analogue symbiosis. They released their first LP in may 2018 with label Copypasta Editions and Aussenraum Records.

His solo project makes use of SuperCollider with which he brings together an infinity of digital function generators. With his music, he creates a massive polyphonic and multichannel soundscape where frequencies merge into an intense magma of resonating waves, aiming for immersive hypnotic atmosphere with low frequency beats synchronised with natural brainwaves and molecular resonance patterns. He also audiovisual live creations and action noise performances in collaboration with several visual and sound artists.

Daniel Maszkowicz presented his work internationally and contributed to numerous soundtracks and publications.
