Three years after his last studio album, Orson Hentschel returns with a multi-outputted visual album. Heavy Light, the title of his fourth album project, consists of three parts - a 3-channel film installation, a visual live-performance and the album itself. Hentschel expands the format of the conventional album to an audiovisual experience by merging elements of film, dance and music in a synthesis of arts. The project evolved in the time of Corona, which first affected him visually when the city (Berlin) turned into a ghost town during the first lockdown. Light became the most vibrant element in the city, which influenced both picture and sound. Metallic, sometimes harsh and electrifying, surroundings of the urban life are landscaped into eclectic pulses.

Following the reissue of Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light in December, Erased Tapes are thrilled to announce the reissue of the band’s second album As Seen Through Windows out on April 28 — including a digital Special Edition version featuring three previously unreleased bonus tracks, all featuring saxophonist and friend of the band, Colin Stetson. Expanding further on the foundation that Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light laid, the group refined and tightened their sound on this masterpiece. The dynamic lead single ‘Open Organ’ is one of the pieces that have never been heard before — now streaming everywhere, with the vinyl edition on pre-order.

"’Open Organ’ started as an idea at my and Pietro’s loft “The Bread Factory”, where we used to do Bell Orchestre shows and parties. We recorded some of the song with Mark Lawson on tape at the old Arcade Fire church studio (Petite Église) in Quebec — speeding up and slowing down the tape machine to record all the drum rolls and wood blocks, experimenting with pitches bending upwards and downwards. And then the second half we recorded with John McEntire at Soma in Chicago. Colin Stetson and Andy King came along to add extra trumpet firepower." – Richard Reed Parry, Bell Orchestre.

Bell Orchestre retreated to Banff Centre in the rocky mountains of Alberta to write the follow-up to their debut album. The title As Seen Through Windows is inspired by the rehearsal space where it was written. The room had two exterior walls entirely made of windows, and with the cinematic view of the mountains they saw occasional herds of elks and deers passing by.

The album was produced by John McEntire (Stereolab, Jeff Parker), drummer and producer of the legendary Chicago post-rock band Tortoise. McEntire had been the group’s dream producer to work with. “I think I was more starstruck around John McEntire than I’d been around anyone before,” says violinist Sarah Neufeld. McEntire was up for trying anything in the studio, and inspired the band endlessly.

Now looking back at the recording sessions, lap steel guitarist Michael Feuerstack remembers “I don’t know how aware we were of the uniqueness of our bond and the resulting methods of music making, but they are very evident across this recording.”

Following the original release, they went on to tour the world, from festivals and theatres to small venues and squats.

Taroug is the solo project by drummer and electronic music producer Tarek Zarroug with roots in the suburbs of the Tunisian desert and having grown up in Germany. Following the release of his 2020 EP, „Perpetual,“ as well as a number of notable remixes for artists such as Archive, Taroug has continued to refine his musical aesthetic.

Taroug‘s debut album Darts & Kites, set to be released on Denovali Records, draws inspiration from the Penrose tiling and explores themes of change and transformation. Fascinated from the pattern‘s unending possibilities, Taroug incorporated its infinite permutations not only into the album‘s nine tracks, but also in the cover art design.

Darts & Kites showcases a blending of genres and styles, resulting in a sonic landscape, that is both hunting and beautiful. Experimental and abstract soundscapes are enriched by oriental influences, collected field recordings, pulsating dark beats and hypnotic vocals.

The album also features the contributions of other notable artists, including Beate Wolff‘s cello performance on Jewels I. Benedikt Koch‘s saxophone adds a sense of controlled chaos with delayed and swelling notes to the track Deguech, while Timo Schieber‘s piano provides a crucial element of the album‘s title track, Darts & Kites. Niklas Genschel lends his vocals to Queen of Carthage, which also features the saz playing of Abdallah Abozekry.

Created in collaboration with architect and designer Marie Brosius, the album artwork captures different ornaments reflecting the album‘s content. Darts & Kites is a mosaic of sound, blending together elements of unfamiliar and familiar.

As the days shorten, and the leaves fall, we are pleased to bring you this most appropriately seasonal release from Italian based musician, Francis M. Gri, entitled “Decays”. At times sounding like the soundtrack to a moody, somber Tarkovsky film, Gri has captured the din of the clatter and clang of life as it grows, and then rises in an uplifting anthemic glory to all that man has made, and unmade. May 28 will see prolific Japanese vibraphonist, multi-percussionist and composer Masayoshi Fujita mark a new sonic direction with his forthcoming album Bird Ambience on Erased Tapes.

The lead single ‘Thunder', which blends mildly abrasive effects on the marimba with a warm feeling of benevolence, was inspired by the poem You Will Hear Thunder by Anna Akhmatova. It comes with an equally breathtaking video directed and shot by Ryo Noda in the mountainscapes that surround Fujita's new life in Hyogo, rural Japan.

Bird Ambience brings several fresh changes for the artist. Until now, Fujita would separate his acoustic solo recordings, the electronic dub made under his El Fog alias, and his experimental improvisations with contemporaries such as Jan Jelinek. The new album sees him unite all these different facets for the first time into one singular vision. He also makes a lateral leap from his signature instrument the vibraphone – on which he created his acclaimed triptych Stories (2012), Apologues (2015) and Book of Life (2018) – to the marimba, which takes centre stage on his new album alongside drums, percussion, synths, effects and tape recorder.
 
“The way of playing the marimba is similar to the vibraphone, so it was kind of a natural development for me and easier to start with, yet it sounds very different”, explains Masayoshi. “The marimba bars are made with wood and it has a wider range than the vibraphone, which gives me a bigger sound palette with more possibilities. I play the instrument with bows and mallets, and sometimes manipulate it with effects.”
 
The record also marks his liberation from fastidious preparation for past solo releases to new endeavours in improvisation. “I prioritised trying to capture the wonder which happens during those occasional magic improv moments. Sometimes the mic-ing and placement of instruments was pretty rough; things weren’t perfect and everything was done quickly, but it turned out as the final recording. Overall when I couldn’t decide between two takes, I told myself to go with the first”, Masayoshi recalls. 

Arranged with a perfect Kanso-like balance, the unhurried pace of Bird Ambience allows each sound and phrase enough time to be mindfully absorbed and savoured. This subtle but affective work carries ethereal remnants of Midori Takada’s minimalism, the static atmospheres of Mika Vainio, To Rococo Rot’s organics and the bucolic electronics of Minotaur Shock. Fujita vaporises contemporary and classical, ambient and dismantled dub, controlled noise and fragments of jazz into an atmospheric, static mist, which he skilfully coerces into new forms.
   
Bird Ambience will be released on Erased Tapes in 2LP, CD and digital formats on May 28.
