This mix is my opening set as a resident of the Sweet Abyss event series, recorded at Bantha Tea Bar in Pittsburgh, PA on February 26th, 2025, prior to a performance by Sug + Slug Beat Band and a DJ set from Formosa. The mix was mastered by Ali Berger. 

I felt this set captured a particular freakiness and range I was excited to share with folks. The week of the gig I had been going through some older beat / hip-hop records I had for years but had never or rarely played out as part of a formal set; mixing these together with some ambient & synth soundscapes in the days prior created the nucleus of the set to me. I came in more prepped than usual with the running order but still left some room for last-minute decisions and was glad to incorporate some errors in the moment in a “happy accident” kind of way. Both the Meredith Monk piece and Vivien Goldman “Private Armies” had been feeling particularly resonant and prescient over the past few months - setting the mix off with those and blending various eras of my past (through selections from different eras of my record collection) in order to come to a present clarity and understanding and way forward provided a cathartic and poetic throughline for me to arrange.
As far as the night of, I have greatly enjoyed being part of the Sweet Abyss event crew and knew from the last few events in the space that the audience would be particularly receptive and properly stoned and/or sober enough to enjoy the ride. I was sitting down, the audience was primarily sitting down, no alcohol was served, and I felt as though I was performing a recital at times, which was particularly amusing to me. (As always, I had accompaniment on fog machine.) I certainly got some existential anxiety out and had some moments of release playing some meaningful selections to me (thank you to the Bantha denizen who got up from their gamer laptop to absolutely freak it during the new wave portion of the set lol) and overall things felt accordingly moody & funky which is always the ideal balance for me.
I find great joy in assembling a (hopefully somewhat) coherent soundscape from as many disparate genres and sounds as possible and while this particular collection is on the freakier end for me, I do view it all as a complete and balanced breakfast. The wait is finally over. Starting today, a gradual rollout of the recordings from this year's campout will begin.  First up is the legendary Rich King. On Friday morning, Rich opened Hemlock Hole with a sweeping 3.5 hour set of atmospheric tones and soulful house music.
