It's an album that has one - and ONLY one - aim: to revive the old black/thrash spirit of the early/mid '80s, when legends like Venom, Bathory, Celtic Frost, Sodom, and Voivod stalked the earth. On paper, it sounds like an idea that's been wrung dry, but it's an idea that takes on especial gravitas coming from black metal scene veterans - namely Greece's legendary The Magus, who's wielded wide influence upon the black metal scene since the early '90s with Necromantia and Thou Art Lord. Joining him here on PRINCIPALITY OF HELL's Fire & Brimstone are fellow conspirators El (Soulskinner, Thou Art Lord) and J. Maelstrom (Ravencult, Thou Art Lord), and together they create a rowdy, galloping ride through blackthrash's darkest past. And yet, each song (including a classic early Exodus cover) remains varied from the next, with each deadly strike lodging immediately within the cranium. This release shows the band in it's primordial state when they injected an eerie melodic element into their extremely harsh and aggressive music. BLACK WITCHERY's releases are considered by many to be the most grim and hateful music ever to emerge from the US underground. THE CULT 1992 RELEASE OF BLACK/VIKING METAL FROM THE GRAMMY-AWARD-WINNING NORWEGIAN PIONEERS, NOW ON PEACEVILLE.    

Enslaved was formed by Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson in 1991, and are based in Bergen, Norway. Ivar and Grutle had previously played together in the death metal band, Phobia. Taking a different route to many of the extreme metal Norwegian bands of the early 90’s, Enslaved embraced their Viking history and culture, composing ferocious epics of extreme metal combined with hypnotic riffs and repetitious structures; Enslaved even becoming signed to Euronymous’ Deathlike Silence label early in their career.

  ‘Yggdrasill’ was the band’s second demo (following 1991’s feet-finding ‘Nema’), showing a young band with great passion and creativity. The songs were understandably raw and contained some traits of the Norwegian wave of black metal sweeping the region at the time, along with their own individual touch. Although more focused on Viking/Norwegian lore than anything satanic, Enslaved’s signature sound still captured the magic of the genre with long, hypnotic compositions losing the listener within their vast sonic landscapes.  

Over the years, the band has integrated strong elements of progressive music into their compositions and  Enslaved has gone on to worldwide notoriety for their stunning live shows and accomplished blend of atmospherics & sumptuous, powerful riffs, receiving numerous accolades along the way, including Norwegian Grammys.  

This edition of ‘Yggdrasill’ contains lyrics, as well as new liner notes written by the band.
