Solarstone Presents Pure Trance Radio Episode 324

On Saturday, April 30th, 2022, I was honored to be on the opening roster to perform a B2B (back-to-back) set, paired up with my long-time Seattle DJ friend, the lovely Janice Chae, a.k.a. J-NOTE, for none other than one of the true Godfathers of the Trance scene, legendary UK Trance artist and record producer, PAUL OAKENFOLD. Truth be known, it was Paul Oakenfold that originally sent me spiraling into the world of Trance, from which I never have emerged again, in 1998 when I first heard his album “Tranceport” at Disney World in Orlando, FL. That album blew my mind and it sent me into this mad frenzy to find more and more of this music called Trance, which led me down the rabbit hole to other artists over the next few years like Tiesto, Mirco de Govia, Ronski Speed, Kyau & Albert, NuNRG, Andy Moor, Mike Shiver, Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Cosmic Gate, and eventually Above & Beyond, ANJUNA, etc, but that whole journey for me had a definitive starting point, “the Big Bang” as it were, and for me that was Paul Oakenfold… So, this show really felt like a going the full circle for me, and was just a really amazing night. It was also my good friend Eric Weber’s birthday, and he DJ’d an amazing all-classics Birthday set right after us, so it was truly a night to remember, and the club was totally packed with Trance fans and had an incredible energy to play to. Janice and I didn’t rehearse this set, we just set rough guidelines for general BPM and feel, and to try to have tracks that were easier to mix into, but what you hear on this set is what we figured out organically as we played through our 70-minute time slot. It was a total blast, and getting to “open for” and actually meet Paul Oakenfold was a definite bucket list item checked off for me. What a night!! A global talent whose music has far surpassed the borders of his hometown of Newcastle, Cristoph’s high-powered productions have seen support from the likes of Pete Tong, Eric Prydz, Hot Since 82, Sasha, Camelphat and Denis Sulta. Having released on a range of heavyweight labels including Pryda Present’s and Knee Deep In Sound, Cristoph now makes his debut on London tastemaker label Anjunadeep.

An assertive club-track that blends the progressive and deep house worlds, ‘Big H 2020’ is a revamp of Cristoph’s 2013 release ‘Big H’. Whilst reminiscent of tracks from label acts such as Yotto and Tinlicker in its dark vocal cuts and rolling drums, ‘Big H 2020’ also showcases Cristoph’s penchant for captivating songwriting in its infectious piano hook. Speaking on his songwriting process, Cristoph explains:

“I like my music to have this driving nature paired with an emotional breakdown to build up and come out of. It’s what I remember classic progressive house was like with regards to artists like Sasha and Digweed. I was just a young kid listening to their stuff and that’s exactly what I’m trying to deliver with my work.”

This classic progressive house affinity has seen Cristoph create some of the biggest dance hits of past years, including 2019 single ‘Breathe’, which has since accumulated 58M streams on Spotify, and inspired a slew of remixes. Fittingly, ‘Big H 2020’ looks to continue this trend whilst simultaneously paying homage to Cristoph’s father: 

“Big H was what I used to call my Dad. He was my hero in life and my best mate. We had a plan to break into the ‘DJ world’ and hopefully tour the world. Unfortunately, he’s not here to see me continuing to try and reach that today. With it being his 5 year anniversary this year I just thought it would be nice to revamp the original so it would fit into my sets etc a lot better.”

‘Big H 2020’ lands on October 2 via Anjunadeep.

Cristoph - Big H 2020

Some artists make music to sell records, some artists make music to be famous, some artists make music because they’re good at it… as for Taglo, he makes music to illustrate himself.

Having always had a strange allure to music, Taglo found himself drawn to soundscapes from an early age. His experience of growing up living all over the world exposed him to such a wide array of
music across different cultures, and when he discovered artists like Axwell, Tiesto and Deadmau5, he decided to pursue his fascination for music into something more.

His journey began in the cosmos of trance, and over the years he began to slow things down and evolve into a deeper, progressive sound. Taglo’s soundscaping is emotive, melodic and meaningful –
there’s meaning to his melodies, there’s drive.

Taglo has supported all the heavy hitters, including Above & Beyond, 
Armin Van Buuren, Cosmic Gate – just to name a few. He’s played at some of Australia’s most prestigious festivals, most recently including Elements Festival, Transmission and Festival X
