The Chevalier de Saint-Georges tore through space at dizzying speed, heading straight for Djbaxx, a planet covered entirely in water. No land, no islands—just an endless ocean, bathed in the crushing light of a colossal star. So close to its boiling surface, the star unleashed unbearable heat, sending colossal geysers skyward, rising into space before being scattered by solar winds.

Vano engaged the thrusters, piercing the atmosphere. Below, the ocean stretched infinitely, a liquid mirror shifting under the blinding light. He did not slow down. The Chevalier de Saint-Georges plunged headfirst toward the luminous abyss.
Then, the water stirred.

A colossal creature rose from the depths, its bioluminescent scales flickering like shifting constellations. Its immense jaws opened, ready to swallow the ship whole.
Too late to evade.

Impact.
The Chevalier tore through the beast, splitting it apart in a burst of light. A shockwave rippled across the ocean, sending towering waves outward. Schools of glowing fish scattered, casting iridescent trails through the water. The ship sustained no damage—its hull was unbreakable. The lifeless creature sank into the depths, its fluorescent blood dissolving into the infinite blue.

Then, everything changed.
The ocean wasn’t just water—it was alive.
The star’s brilliance penetrated thirty kilometers below, revealing an inverted sky, filled with drifting constellations of living creatures.

Neon fish swirled in radiant spirals.
Forests of glowing kelp pulsed with slow, hypnotic waves.
Colossal beings floated like ancient gods, sending out luminous signals in an unreadable language.
Vano, a traveler of infinite worlds, slowed down.
He let The Chevalier de Saint-Georges drift, surrendering to the currents. The water flowed over the hull, a shimmering veil unveiling the planet’s hidden pulse.

As he descended, the ecosystem revealed itself in layers—an intricate ballet of movement and light, each flicker part of an unseen harmony. Entire schools of creatures moved in synchronized formations, some spiraling around the ship, others fleeing, vanishing into the depths.
Then, the colors faded.
The vibrant, teeming world grew silent. The crystal-clear water darkened, thickening into an eerie twilight.
The dazzling beauty above gave way to an unsettling presence.
The currents shifted—colder, more erratic.
The shadows stretched below him, shifting, watching.
A shiver ran down Vano’s spine. Djbaxx had yet to reveal its true face.

Part 14.1 : Djbaxx and the Sea of Light

After the titanic duel, Vano and his team returned to the shadows, broken but alive. Graigus the Mad, gravely wounded, and the captain himself, barely able to walk, bore the scars of their battle. Their victory was never celebrated. Humanity knew nothing of what had transpired. They received no praise, no recognition—only the weight of silence and their wounds.

Hiding in a secret refuge, they tended to their injuries. Their loyal allies, Professor Arkinor, Torni the philosopher, and Ambassador 1.618, watched over them. But discretion and caution were not enough. In the shadows, the powerful of this world were already conspiring. Gold and influence had spoken: Captain Vano had to be eliminated once and for all.

An assassin was hired. A nameless, faceless hunter, guided only by the promise of an astronomical reward. He tracked Captain Vano with patience and persistence. No refuge, no trick could escape the gaze of those who ruled this world. Despite all precautions, despite the vigilance of his companions, the assassin eventually found their hideout.

He struck without warning. A laser pistol shot to the back.

Vano did not move. He made no effort to dodge or fight back. He collapsed slowly, as if accepting this end, as if this moment had been written long before his final battle. His companions rushed to him, but it was already too late. In his final moments, there was no scream, no anger—only an eerie serenity.

Vano knew. The curse of the black eyes had left him after the duel, as if its purpose had been fulfilled, as if that ancient force had extinguished with the battle. But he also knew the fate of humanity. He never spoke of it, perhaps to avoid hastening the inevitable, perhaps because some truths must never be uttered.

Thus perished Captain Vano, not at the hands of creatures from beyond the stars, but through the betrayal of his own. His name was erased from official records, his existence reduced to a mere whisper—a legend murmured only by the few who still remembered his struggle.

But a star never truly dies. And in the vastness of the cosmos, the shadow of Vano continued to shine, unseen by men, yet eternal in the silence of the stars.

I’m Tom Ladds, a singer-songwriter and producer from Devon, now releasing music as Moose. I’ve played since I was 11, after begging for a Flying V guitar. My dad was a jazz guitarist, my mum a singer, and my grandad worked with the BBC Big Band, so music’s always been part of me. I studied at Platform One Music College and toured in 2007/8 with indie band Kody, fronted by Gareth Icke, playing the Isle of Wight Festival and headlining the Cavern Club. I was offered a deal with The Animal Farm music label but had to turn it down due to personal circumstances. After a break and a knock to my confidence, I began writing again during the pandemic. That led to i Had a Name (iHaN), named after a song about my nan’s dementia. Moose came from a nickname my best mate calls me, and it stuck. My sound blends ambient, acoustic textures with personal stories. I’ve had airplay on BBC Introducing and BBC Radio Devon and was a semi-finalist in the International Song writing Competition.
