This photo of me in the single art really does encapsulate my gestalt when I was younger. Always high, usually in my head, often silent. I did not give a fuck. Or at least I thought didn’t.

What I didn’t realize through all the drugs, the car wrecks, the arrests, is that even if you know the world around you is wrong, by running from it, you run the risk of also running from yourself. And that’s what I did. I ran so far from myself that I ended up in a psychosis when I was 19 (another story).

I haven’t talked about this with many people, but after I recovered from the psychosis, I experienced “emotional anhedonia” for years.

It’s kind of like instead of working with 100% of your pleasure emotional spectrum, you’re working with only 10%. I’d hear a joke and intellectually know it’s funny or listen to a song that used to deeply move me, but I couldn’t emotionally conjure a reaction. Just this empty void.

Over the years, my emotional spectrum gradually returned.

Ironically, by facing the pain that I had been dissociating from, I gained access to the pleasure and the self that I’d buried so many years before.

While there’s a sadness to the song, I hear it as hopeful. It’s about reclaiming years lost, understanding coping mechanisms and instead of running from pain, embracing it.

It’s okay to cry ❤️
