Night Ballad

 is an experimental project that reimagines the traditional Balinese concept of a circular performance space through contemporary ambient sound. Utilizing elements of gamelan and minimal sound design, this work is composed for a 360-degree sound system that distributes sound layers throughout the space. This piece explores the relationship between space, movement, and sonic perception as a new form of kalangan performance. 

KALANGAN

The title song Rab Se, sung by a master of classical singing, Sudeep Banerjee, translates as "From Divinity". This song is a deeply felt wish from a person for another (usually for a baby, child, or younger person), and this wish is to have the following blessings in their life: a home that feels like a garden of happiness where no sign or scar of sadness remains; that they know to speak true, love deep, help those in need with their wisdom, and be strong enough to uplift lives such that they are thought of with a great fondness.

We all know "The Star-Spangled Banner" and have our own relationship with it depending on where we heard or sang it first, and all the ways we've heard it since. When the pianist Jay Hogan asked me to sing his new arrangement, I said yes, but also told him I wasn't the song's biggest fan. It's a hard one to sing, first of all, but it also puts bombs and rockets at the center of our national identity. My preference would have been to put our beauty, our generosity, and our big hearts in that space instead. But as I learned the song -- researched its history, read additional verses, and did the homework that goes into recording a song -- I came to respect it. Singing it this way has opened my eyes to its power
