The conceptual and multi-faceted composer/arranger/orchestrator Kah Yong has made an indelible mark on the Chinese Orchestral scene with a creative repertoire that spans the boundaries of classical, Anime soundtracks, Eastern and Western musical traditions. His works display a highly original personal voice that exhibits strong character and craftsmanship, often bringing out the unique tonality of a Chinese Orchestra tastefully. An appointed Arranger-in-Residence with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) for 2009, his music has been played throughout the world by renowned professional orchestras and ensembles. He has also arranged for high profile programmes like Sing my Song (中国好歌曲), worked closely with and orchestrated for numerous regional and local artistes including Kay Tse, Tang Na, Tanya Chua, Olivia Ong, Kit Chan, Dick Lee, Liang Wern Fook, Tay Kewei and counting.

Kah Yong’s persistence and hard work in recent years earned him a quick rising reputation in the musical field. His portfolio had broadened rapidly to comprise of Choral Works, Symphonic Bands, Multi-ethnic Orchestras, mainstream Mandarin Pop, advertisement jingles and many others. His composition Journey, commissioned by the Ministry of Education (MOE) as the set piece for the Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging (Chinese Orchestra) 2011 challenged the orchestras with non-traditional Chinese themes in rhythm and intonation. His Pop music interpretations for orchestras had always been a hit and popular worldwide. Hallyu Songs of Fame (2011), a Korean Pop medley arrangement which went viral on YouTube, attracted more than 100,000 hits within 3 days. Singapore Press Holdings commissioned him to orchestrate the Liang Wern Fook Hits’ Medley for the Singapore Entertainment Awards 2010 and was broadcast worldwide on cable television. As a featured pianist, he arranged and recorded in both Dr. Liang Wern Fook’s consecutive instrumental albums Please Tell Her and The Oriental Moon.

Having studied piano since the tender age of four, Kah Yong pursued orchestral composition and arrangement under renowned local composer Law Wai Lun. Moving on to mainstream Pop, he mentored under music veterans Eric Ng and Jim Lim as well as received guidance from legendary A-list Pop Arrangers Goh Kheng Long and Terence Teo.

A highly sought-after orchestrator for his uncanny ability to capture the essence and ideas of music and write in perfect harmony to the most stringent demands of Music and Production Directors, Kah Yong has scored for huge productions like Y.E.S. 933, Capital Radio 95.8FM, Love 97.2FM and UFM 1003 with the SCO gala concerts for 8 consecutive years from January 2008 to 2015. Commissioned by Esplanade and SCO, he orchestrated for another sold-out concert - Our Songs from the Heart in 2012 featuring Singapore artistes and songs including Tanya Chua and Kelly Poon, magnificently fusing pop into Chinese Orchestra. In the same year, he also arranged for Cultural Medallion recipient Dick Lee in his well-received concert The RETURN of the Mad Chinaman.

Kah Yong has worked very closely with Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra to explore on new sounds for the orchestra, with tremendous success. His ensemble works for the Huqin Quartet Leslie Cheung Forever (2012) and Sextet Reaching Higher Steps (步步高) (2014) brought out the unique timbres and performance capabilities of the eco-huqin, a newly developed range of Chinese instruments improved on environmentally friendly concepts.

Not sitting on his laurels, he leverages on his orchestration background and strong music instincts to produce advertisement jingles for major clients such as Cerebos (Brands Essence of Chicken). His creative Teochew Nang jingles produced for Teochew Festival 2014 went viral within 24 hours and were shared furiously on social media. He was commissioned to produce the music for the Teochew Festival Gala Night Musical (2014) in which he orchestrated and recorded with the City of Prague Philharmonic.
