[동물]은 4인조 그룹 ‘단편선과 선원들’의 첫 번째 앨범이다. 단순하지만 앨범 제목이라 하기엔 직관적이지 않은 [동물]에는 육체가 가득하다. 숨 쉬고 울부짖고 으르렁거리며 뛰어다닌다. 앨범에 담긴 모든 소리는 인간의 몸과 도구가 서로 조화롭게 어울리며, 때로는 서로 예민하게 갈등하는 와중에 녹음되었다. 전기적인 증폭을 자제하는 대신 각 악기의 물리적인 한계를 쥐어짜듯 연주되어진 어쿠스틱 기타, 바이올린, 퍼커션, 베이스는 각 곡마다 다양한 변주를 들려주고 있지만, 곡들은 과장되어있지 않고 담백하다. 필요한 곳에서 제 기능을 하는 음들이 선명하게 배치되어있으며, 곡의 또렷한 모습을 위해 혼란스럽고 정제되지 않은 표현들이 매끄럽고 지능적으로 사용되었다. 대지에 웅크린 사자처럼, 창공에서 날개를 펼친 군함조처럼 모든 동작이 제 자리에 있다.
 
[동물]은 매우 선명한 이미지들을 청자에게 건넨다. 난해한 가사와 박자와 화성을 무시하며 자유롭게 확장되는 연주가 서로 경쟁하고 갈등하는 순간에도 [동물]은 또렷하게 움직인다. 이 작업을 선원들이란 이름의 동물을 스타디움에 풀어놓고 다각도의 UHD 카메라로 찍는 다큐멘터리에 비유할 수도 있을 것이다. 카메라에 담긴 동물의 동작은 완전하게 낯선 것도, 익숙한 것도 아니다. 한국의 옛 가요, 영미권의 언더그라운드 포크, 아방가르드, 클래식, 집시음악, 익스페리먼틀 록, 3세계의 여러 비트뮤직들이 뒤섞여 있다. 그러나 이 움직임들의 최종적인 목표는 무엇을 닮기 위한 것이 아닌, 새로운 것을 제시하는 쪽에 가깝다. 엉키고 뒤섞여 곤죽이 된 연주와 냉정을 유지하며 하이파이하게 동작을 담아내는 레코딩 사이에서, 선원들은 모순을 피해가는 대신 정면을 치받으며 충돌을 에너지로 발산한다.
 
[동물]에는 2007년부터 2013년까지 회기동 단편선이 솔로 활동을 하며 발표한 앨범에서 골라 다시 작업한 곡들과 선원들을 만나 함께 새로 쓴 곡들이 담겨있다. 새로 쓴 곡들을 제외하더라도, 앨범에 담긴 음악은 이제 그 혼자만의 것이 아니다. 친구들과 함께 연주하고 다시 만든 음악이기 때문이다. 선원들은 단순히 연주를 보탠 것을 넘어 음악에 새로운 기운을 불어넣고 의미를 확장시키고 있다. 그것은, 누구 말마따나, 음악에 있어 새로운 길을 열어줄 것이다. 갓 완성된 한 마리의 헐떡이는 [동물]이 서로에게 어떤 의미가 되고 또 듣는 이에게 어떤 의미가 될 것인가는 시간이 지난 후에 구체화될 것이다. 이제, [동물]은 단편선과 선원들의 첫 번째 정규 앨범이다.

"Pictureplane"(Travis Egedy), is a popular artist known for making his come up in the electronic music scene, DIY Venues, also popular for hanging around artists like "Grimes" and "Crystal Castles" in the early come up days of these artist, he is also the one who came up with the word "Witch House" which is a playful word on "House" music, though "Witch House" is now a popular music genre that is enjoyed by many.

"Crystal Castles" are actually one of the very first, if not the first electronic music duo to actually invent "Witch House" music, as you can hear dark beats and sorrow drawn out voices off of some of their early (demo songs/ Demo Album) dating back from "2007" and before that, which is crazy to think since during that time "Witch House" did not have a name for itself yet.
