Welcome to Twice 5 Miles Radio with your host, James Navé. I recently had the privilege of launching my new book, "100 Days, A Poetic Memoir After Cancer,"  in a unique, live-spoken word show, "Once Upon a Time in Early Summer." This event occurred at The Story Parlor, Asheville's intimate listening room, on June 25th.

Instead of the typical book launch, I found myself amidst a gathering of 40 curious and creative souls, many of whom are close friends. Once "Upon a Time in Early Summer" was more than a book launch; it evolved into an improvisational exploration, a delicate blend of remembrances shared by old friends, new experiences narrated by recent acquaintances, and a sense of community in the small-tribe-vibe of wizards and dreamers.

Together, we all became part of this beautiful narrative, suspended in an exquisite hour that held so much early summer. Enjoy this recorded show of what unfolded on that magical evening at The Story Parlor. I am profoundly proud and grateful for what we accomplished together.

I'm on a journey of 100 days to self-love, personal empowerment, and self confidence. As I go through this journey, I'll be checking in each week until I reach 100 days (because without accountability, I know I won't make it). I'm going to talk about both what I'm learning/feeling/experiencing and what topics I reflected on that week. Every day, I will focus on a new theme, which I'm sharing on my Instagram.

Trump is pointing to Kilmar Abrego Garcia's tattoos to justify his indefinite detention without charge in the ultra-oppressive Salvadoran prison gulag. These notoriously include a cannabis leaf, demonstrating the continued propaganda utility of the "Reefer Madness" stigma, even as a multi-million dollar legal industry emerges. But the White House actually added the characters "MS13" (name of the notorious Salvadoran gang) to the shot of Abrego Garcia's knuckles in a crude photoshop job—despite transparent denials from Trump. Lubricating the emerging transnational mass detention program with this Orwellian post-truth stratagem, the Trump regime meanwhile moves toward actual deportation of US citizens. Twice 5 Miles Radio is an hour-long interview show that digs beneath the surface with people with much to say and the courage to say.  The show's title (Twice 5 Miles) comes from lines in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem Kubla Khan. 

I am a poet, storyteller, educator, and manuscript coach with an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. With over 20 years of experience, I’ve taught workshops on writing, creativity, and public speaking worldwide, drawing from a background that includes memorizing 600+ poems and performing poetic storytelling globally.

My latest book, 100 Days: A Poetic Memoir After Cancer, was published by 3: A Taos Press in May 2023. I’ve also co-authored How to Read for an Audience and Write What You Don’t Know: Ten Steps to Writing with Confidence, Energy, and Flow. Through The Imaginative Storm Writing Project, co-created with Allegra Huston, I guide writers to unlock their creativity and craft impactful, dynamic work.

As co-founder of The Artist’s Way Creativity Camp with Julia Cameron, I’ve taught creativity courses for over two decades. Julia describes me as “a quick, curious mind with a humanist eye for poetic detail and an important force for change.”

I’ve also served as director of The Taos Storytelling and Poetry Festivals and host Twice 5 Miles Radio, a podcast broadcast in Asheville and Taos and streamed on SoundCloud.

Evan Shafran, also known professionally as EVeryman, is an American rapper, actor, comedian, DJ, and B-boy. He is recognized for his conscious lyricism, high-energy performances, and multidisciplinary contributions to music, theater, and film. Shafran is a member of SAG-AFTRA, Actors' Equity Association, and ASCAP.
Early Life and Education
Shafran was born in Portland, Maine, to Jeff and Theda Shafran, proprietors of Tommy’s Hardware and Scuba Diving shop. He began performing at age 7, encouraged by his mother, Theda, who passed away in 1997. His brother and best friend, Brad Shafran, is a dog lover and incredible yoga teacher in Maine. His Father still resides in Maine with his step-mother Dottie. 
Shafran graduated from Deering High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Theatre and Sociology from Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York, graduating summa cum laude. He later relocated to Los Angeles in 2008.
Career:
Music
As EVeryman, Shafran is known for his optimistic and socially conscious hip-hop. He co-founded the hip-hop group Little Giants with DJ/producer Pumpkin. He has performed at major festivals including Coachella, Burning Man, Shambhala, and Lightning in a Bottle, and has shared stages with artists such as Pretty Lights, Odesza, and Mark Farina. He currently runs the Independent Music Label, Little Giant Acorn Records.
Acting and Theater
Shafran's acting credits include appearances in films and television series such as Barbie, The Lincoln Lawyer, and Get Out. He starred in Storyteller, a short film that was a semifinalist for Best Dramatic Short at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. He is also an associate producer with Mir Productions, a Brooklyn-based theater company, where he co-wrote and performed in plays including If There’s Jack in the Box Get Out and Hear NYC. 
Other Work
Shafran co-authored the children's book The Little Giant Acorn, available on Amazon.  He is active in advocating for social and environmental issues and promoting diversity and representation in media.
Personal Life
Shafran resides in Los Angeles, California, and maintains strong ties to his roots in Maine and New York City. He is an avid Star Wars fan and continues to engage with various facets of the performing arts. Peep his music mixes here:
