Brighton-based indie-electronic duo Bloody Tourist return with Elephants Don’t Bother Children. It’s a slinky, tongue-in-cheek track that blends playful self-deprecation with serious groove. Out July 30th, the single marks a defining moment in the evolution of the band’s sonic identity and continues the build-up to their debut album Love Was a Big Thing.
Built around loopy SP-404 drums and chopped vocal samples, EDBC turns anxiety and self-doubt into something weirdly empowering and joyously off-kilter. The track began as an inside joke and the title is an anagram of its own chord sequence (E–D–B–C). What started as a late-night experiment became the emotional and sonic blueprint for the rest of the record.
Lyrically, it’s a surreal birthday card scribbled with existential dread: Elvis has been let out the building, bacon sarnies are sacred, and self-worth is hiding behind a pair of knock-off sunglasses. "It’s a track about insecurity masquerading as confidence," the band explain. "You’re not sure who you are, but you’re hoping that if you put the shades on, the swagger will follow."
While previous releases have seen Bloody Tourist hop across genres, from lo-fi synth pop to guitar-led post-punk, the thread has always been unmistakable: surreal lyrics, warped charm, and a strangely comforting sense of unease. Elephants Don’t Bother Children is no different. With its swaggering, slanted rhythm section, irreverent humour, and bittersweet hooks, it feels like trying to convince yourself (and maybe everyone else) that you’re okay being you and almost pulling it off.
Part of a Brighton collective including Roman Joon, Sock Drawer and Franklin Mansion, Bloody Tourist have seen support across BBC Radio 1 & 6 Music and will be releasing on Talk Show Host Records.
