They  took  him  one  a  bright  May  morning, 
In  his  pain  in  his  anguish,  his  grief 
And  sat  him  down  there  on an old prison  chair 
Before  he  would  take  his  long  sleep. 

He  had  called  to  those  boys  on  that  Monday: 
“Go  gather  your  packs  and  your  will, 
And  say  your  goodbye’s,  though  there  may  be  sighs 
We  go  to  do  liberty’s  will!” 

“O  I’m  not  the  first,  nor  the  last 
Though they  take  me  and  shoot  me  today; 
But  listen,  boys,  listen  fast, 
To  these  word  I  have  to  say: 

“Fight  for  your  right  to  be  people, 
Fight  for  your  nation!  Be  free! 
Stand  up  to  that  greed  and  that  treason 
That  deals  in  base  slavery. 
T’was  for  bread,  and  for  life,  and  for  freedom 
We  raised  our  Starry  Plough; 
We  saw  it  flow  in  the  bright  morning  sun 
Ah!  Boys!  Would you  look  at  it  now! 

We  were  but  poverty’s  children 
The  workers  who  make  the  world  turn 
They  pressed  us  for  sweat  —  but  never  forget 
The  power  that  you  hold  when  you  yearn! 

We  fought  for  the  love  of  a  Nation, 
To  raise  the  slave-poor  from  the  mud 
We  wrote  in  our  frail  proclamation  — 
Our  names  that  we  signed  there  in  blood  — 

It’s  the  script  of  the  love  of  our  people, 
The  code  for  a  life  without  shame, 
Read  it  aloud,  that  each  child  might  be  proud 
Of  their  country,  their  people,  their  name”. 


There’s  a  spot  in  a  yard,  in  a  prison 
Hear  the  echoes  that  ring  on  each  wall; 
Hear  the  names, they  are  singing  for  ever, 
Of  those brave  ones who  answered  that  call. 
And  it’s  Connolly‘s  name  they  are  shouting  — 
The  men  who  are  mired  in  their  sweat  — 
And  it’s  liberty’s  song  they  are  singing 
And  they’re  marching,  marching  yet. 
O They’re  marching,  marching  yet!

78rpm Disc: Edward Herborn and James Wheeler: The Mouse in the Cupboard (jig)

Accordion player Edward Herborn and banjoist James Wheeler recorded this disc in December of 1916. The duo were the first Irish dance musicians Ellen O'Byrne offered to Columbia to record, which eventually proved the demand for Irish traditional music in America.

In this week’s episode of “Recording the Revolution”, Conor and Harlan pluck their second tape from the archive and discuss Harlan’s illuminating interview with the printer of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, Christopher “Christy” Brady. Christopher Brady reminisces on his time spent in Liberty Hall, his conversations with James Connolly and the secrecy surrounding the printing of the Proclamation. Christopher Brady was interviewed on 26 March 1972.

The Harlan Strauss Tapes

In 1972, Harlan J Strauss, a young American PhD student, came to Ireland and interviewed veterans of the Irish independence struggle - men and women, at this point in their 70s and 80s, who shared their experiences, sometimes for the first time.

These audio recordings sat in Harlan’s attic in Washington, DC for decades, unpublished and unheard. In 2022, Harlan brought them to Dublin and deposited them at the National Folklore Collection at UCD. This podcast explores the things those people said and how those who lived through the Irish revolution saw it fifty years after the fact.

Harlan’s tapes offer often unparalleled insights into both the experiences and perceptions of revolutionaries reflecting back on their youth. Now, 50 years later, Conor and Harlan have teamed up to delve into these interviews and get an insight into the mind of an Irish revolutionary.

In this week’s episode of “Recording the Revolution”, Conor and Harlan are taking a look at Harlan's interview with James M Dillon, the former leader of Fine Gael from 1959 to 1965 and son of the Home Rule MP John Dillon. James Dillon sheds light on what life was like during the Irish Revolutionary period and talks about his time spent in the Dail from the 1930s onwards. James Dillon was interviewed by Harlan on 17 March 1973.

Who Am I?

I grew up in Ballymun, Dublin, back in the 80s. Before I ever set foot in a rave, I was a full-on rocker, blasting 80s rock music day and night. Then came the 90s—and everything changed. My first rave was at the Mansion House, and it flipped my world upside down.

I left that night humming two tracks I’d never forget: Rozalla – Everybody’s Free and 2 Unlimited – Get Ready for This. I was hooked. So hooked, in fact, that I walked straight to Abbey Discs on Abbey Street at 4 a.m. and queued until it opened (yeah, I know—bit of a weirdo). You’d swear it was the Christmas sales or I was queuing for one of those free holidays from Budget Travel.

That morning, I bought my first vinyl records—despite not owning a turntable. All I had was a tape deck. For the next year, I kept buying vinyl with no way to play it, until I finally got my hands on a second-hand mixer and turntable setup (nothing fancy—definitely not Technics).

While in college on Cathal Brugha Street, I kept raving—mainly in Sides DC. In 1993, I moved to Jersey and got my shot as a DJ at Raffles Nightclub. The only mixing I was familiar with at the time was flour, butter, and eggs for pastry. I flopped hard on my first night—and many nights after. But I kept at it. I worked six nights a week between the lights and decks, learning every step of the way.

Eventually, I came back to Ireland and settled in Ennis, where things really took off. I landed the big nights at The Queens Hotel nightclub and then Central Park. Life became a grind: 50–60 hours a week in a restaurant and 4–5 nights behind the decks. I stayed with The Queens Hotel nightclub for 20 years until I finally decided it was time to hang up the headphones. The long hours and late nights had taken their toll—I was done.

But the music bug never really left me. Over the years, I collected studio gear, planning to start making my own tracks. I dived into YouTube tutorials and music production books, teaching myself everything I could.

Then came COVID. Like many, I had a rough time. I had a serious talk with myself—what was I doing? If something happened to me, all this studio gear gathering dust would go to waste. So I made a decision: drop some weight, get healthy, and get back into music production.

Now? I'm back. Making tunes, loving the process, and reconnecting with the passion that’s been part of me for decades.

Established in 1992, the Ward Irish Music Archives houses the largest public collection of Irish music in America. It is named after John J. Ward Jr., father of Irish Fest founder Ed Ward. The archive currently consists of more than 40,000 Irish music recordings and pieces of memorabilia ranging from rare 78 rpm's, LP's and sheet music to song books, instruments, and concert memorabilia. Many of the archives items are extremely difficult to find today, and our diverse collections focus on subjects such as Irish traditional music, Irish folk songs, Scottish music, and Irish contributions to American popular music.
