Welcome to College Diaries with Vivian! In this episode, I sit down with Sarah Anil Cherian, one of the most thoughtful and inspiring women I know. Sarah is a junior at Westminster College, majoring in political science on the pre-law track with a minor in philosophy. She brings a wealth of insight and honesty to our discussion about the 2024 election and its impact on all of us.

We start by acknowledging how challenging and deeply personal this election has been, and we don’t shy away from expressing the raw emotions surrounding the results. Sarah and I talked about how Kamala Harris’s campaign stood out, especially as a campaign targeting Gen Z and young voters through strategic social media outreach. We explore how her campaign not only attracted numbers of young people to vote but also emphasized the struggles of a woman of color running for President of the United States. From facing bias to carrying the heavy burden of high expectations, we talk candidly about how Harris’s journey resonates with us and what it means for young women who dream of making a difference in politics.

One of the most important parts of our discussion focuses on what we see as the painful reality of this election: the country’s readiness—or lack thereof—to elect a woman, particularly a woman of color, to lead. We share our frustrations over seeing Kamala Harris, a candidate with years of experience, lose ground in areas that past Democratic candidates won, and we talk openly about the potential barriers that exist for women in leadership. 
Through it all, we find hope in how her campaign inspired so many young people and how her concession speech became a call to action for those of us who believe in a brighter future.

Sarah and I also dive into some of the core issues that made this election so personal. As young women, we’re especially concerned about how policies on reproductive rights will shape our futures. We talk about the right to safe and legal abortion and what it means to support friends, family, and strangers who restrictive laws may impact. For those listening in Pennsylvania and Ohio, I share some critical information on abortion access and offer resources for anyone who needs help navigating these challenging times. This conversation isn’t just about the policies we support—it’s about standing up for the people we love and the future we want to create.

Our conversation covers everything from economic policies and political divides to the importance of using our voices and staying informed. But more than anything, Sarah and I want this episode to be a space for listeners who may feel uncertain or discouraged. We remind ourselves and you that we can always make a difference, even in the smallest ways. 

Kamala Harris may not have won this election, but her campaign has sparked something powerful in us—a desire to keep working, hoping, and fighting for a future where everyone has a voice.

Something has happened to the Democratic Party…. 

Today, let’s analyze the results and implications of the election. Democrat Joe Biden won 81.2 million votes in 2020, while Kamala Harris received 71.8 million votes in this election, showing a loss of over 9 million Democratic votes. 

Conversely, Donald Trump increased his voter base, receiving 75.1 million votes compared to 74.2 million in 2020, indicating a significant shift in voter turnout and enthusiasm between the two parties. 

We’ll get into various exit poll statistics, revealing a gender gap, the unexpected Republican win among veterans and Catholics, and Trump's strong performance among certain demographics such as Latinos, young voters, and black men. 

Finally - let’s look at the current political landscape and the challenges and responsibilities facing both parties moving forward.

I feel like if Kamala had won, this song would have gone really hard, but because she lost, it almost seems like its out of nowhere.
