Forty Winks

The last piece to join Sumolicious Edits Vol. 1, made late in the process with my best mate Finji. As we’ve done so many times before, we built it in turns — each of us working for 30 minutes, swapping seats until it was done. In just a few back-and-forth rounds, the track took shape. Calm, smooth, and unhurried, 40 Winks is the perfect closer — a moment to breathe, reflect, and drift out of the EP with a relaxed state of mind.

Sumo is a DJ and an outstanding producer who celebrates his love for Garage House – a unique branch of house music that first emerged in New Jersey in the early 1990s before being further developed in London in the years that followed.
With his debut single Hokori, he presents his very own interpretation of the genre. Naturally, the funky rattling snares and distinctive basslines are front and centre, but it’s the sublime vocals that give the track a delicate touch and lift it beyond the genre’s boundaries. Equally captivating is Sumo’s trademark use of an oscillator between straight and broken beats, making Hokori a perfect opener for his forthcoming Ishiki EP, also set for release on Sonar Kollektiv.

Sumo began playing piano and guitar at an early age, bought his first turntables at fifteen, and later completed formal training as a composer and sound designer. Today, he works at one of the most renowned sound branding studios, composing music for a variety of high-profile projects such as Smart’s trade fair appearances in Paris, Geneva and Frankfurt, the Bread&&Butter exhibition for Mercedes-Benz, and the Humboldt Forum in Berlin.

As a DJ, he has been performing for over a decade at clubs and festivals including 0711 Club, Freund & Kupferstecher, MTV HipHop Open and New Fall Festival, as well as for brand events hosted by Hugo Boss, Karl Lagerfeld, Vogue, Grazia, Mustang, Breuninger and many more.

In addition to his studio sessions and DJ performances, Sumo hosts the 0711 radio show on egoFM and produces the Rillencheck podcast in collaboration with the Mercedes-Benz Museum, alongside fellow DJ artists such as Konstantin Sibold, Leif Müller, Dexter, Fatoni and Torch.
