Spirits of Leo’s cover of the Starflyer 59 classic “The Zenith” is out as of September 19th, 2024. The third track on “All My Friends Who Play Guitar: A Tribute to Starflyer 59,” Spirits put their unique hi-fi dreampop spin on the track, breathing new life into it. "The Zenith" was recorded and mixed at Lux Perpetua NYC.

Starflyer 59 is one of the most pivotal and inspirational bands of the 90s shoegaze scene yet are often overlooked in the shoegaze cannon by UK heavyweights like Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, and Ride. Released alongside classics such as Souvlaki, Going Blank Again, and Mezcal Head, Starflyer 59's Silver is a monumental album that introduced heavier sounds into shoegaze which helped mold the modern scene. à La Carte Records pays homage to Starflyer 59 along with some of our favorite current shoegaze artists with this compilation.

The London based singer and keyboard player Dominic Appleton, known since the early eighties for his musical activity in the space rock/psychedelic (or better “indefinable”) band Breathless, and perhaps even more for his vocal contributions to the legendary This Mortal Coil project on 4AD, joins forces with the Milanese producer and sound artist Matteo Uggeri, active from 1993 behind several projects spanning from industrial to post-rock and ambient soundscapes, known for collaborating with artists such as Maurizio Bianchi, Controlled Bleeding, De Fabriek, OvO, Giuseppe Ielasi, Giulio Aldinucci and many more.

The result, as these premises might foreshadow, is a complex cross-genres album, whose tracks are built on Matteo’s intricate rhythmical musical textures and Dominic’s melancholic and sweet melodies. Everything is enriched by a long list of contributors from both the UK and Italy, adding layers and arrangements of instruments such as violin, cello, trumpet, bass, piano, drums and a tiny bit of acoustic guitar. In their first album, "Starlight and Still Air", released by Beacon Sound, they play songs moving between digital frequencies that meet jazz-like drumming, or soaring strings that overlap with pop-oriented sung vocals.

This PTR episode finds us conducting another Sit+Listen session, in which we experience a masterpiece of an album in its entirety! This time around, it’s Lonely Is An Eyesore, a groundbreaking  project of the independent label 4AD which included a compilation of 4AD roster artists as of 1987, each performing selected songs recorded exclusively for the release. The record was produced in several formats and compositions, and was accompanied by a video compilation of the same songs!

Grey Sparkle is the non-label that puts together the many projects of Matteo Uggeri, including his band Sparkle in Grey and Barnacles.

Grey Sparkle is then also the website of Matteo Uggeri.

Most of Uggeri's work has been released over time by other labels such as Boring Machines, AFE, Old Bicycle, Fluid Audio, ctrl+alt+canc, Disasters by Choice and more.

Kidaphex1975, aka James Trottier, former lead singer and songwriter for the band Hunger Streets, lives and makes music in Berlin. Influenced by the likes of REM, Smiths, 4AD, The Cure, Radiohead and an inherent love for pop music, he releases music marked by a profound influence of American Indie rock, 80s British Alternative and Protest Folk of the 60s. Energetic and catchy songs play along with slower moody pieces, that echo back an era where the rules were still being re-written, before indie became the mainstream.
