Chicago born and bred DJ and 4 Track Recordings (@4trkrecordings) founder Joseph Manumaleuna aka @DJ-Hyperactive needs no introduction to those versed in the history of Techno.

Honing his skills in the highly influential scene and sound of Chicago in the early 90s, DJ Hyperactive gained international recognition and has since gone on to play the most legendary venues of the last 20 years, including Orbit/ Leeds, Liquid Room/ Tokyo, Love Parade/ Berlin, Smart Bar/ Chicago, Interface/ Los Angeles, Movement/ Detroit, Output/ Brooklyn, Tresor/ Berlin, Berghain/ Berlin and more. 

He has produced over 100 remixes and original tracks, including classics such as ‘Venus’ & ‘Wide Open’ – Missile, ‘25HRs’ – Droid Recordings, “Music Box’ on his own imprint 4trk Recordings, ‘Chicago’ – Contact, Truncate, Figure, Blank Code, Impact Mechanics, Nachstrom Schallplatten, CLR, to name a few.

After a little break from podcasts, Hyperactive is getting back into rhythm with some mixes to kick off the new year. He is excited to showcase a bunch of new (and old) tunes, including a few that have recently released in Oct/Nov ’23 on 4Trk. Artists represented include Jason Patrick, the new duo Aliasing (Jason Patrick and DJ Hyperactive), and Kobe Dupree. Dupree’s cosmic ambient opener, 'Jacurutu', sinks you into deep, sub-aquatic techno hypnosis before 'Heretics' layers up alien sounds and rolling kick drums. 'Syk' brings edgy, unrelieved loops and muffled spoken words over more mind-melting rhythm. The supple sounds and otherworldly atmospheres continue on 'Forms', which is marbled with static electricity, with 'Interlude of Voice' marking a moment to reset amongst gorgeous celestial synth smears.

The second half of the album takes in the more punchy but still perfectly loopy deep techno of 'Memory Replacement' and psychedelic swirls of 'Tongue of the Unseen'. There is a mystical charm to the harmonic tones of 'Gammu', a moodier vibe pervades the suspensory 'Fogwood', then ' Semuta Music' traps you in tightly coiled drums and hi-hats while a backlit glow soothes the soul.  'One of Many Faces' closes with a heart-aching piano piece that gets deeply emotional.

Kobe Dupree is a techno artist from Chicago with a deep interest in sound design and minimalism. His musical experiments have been released on Trax Research, Double Vision Records and DJ Hyperactive’s 4Trk, on which he released the ‘Stimulate | Iterate’ EP in 2024. He has a hybrid approach to production, which involves using a modular rig for sound design before moving to a DAW for arrangement and final touches, heard on the sophisticated and cerebral ‘Voice From The Inside’ album.

The title track opens with tunneling, dub-infused energy and a nostalgic edge, followed by ‘I don’t want to wake up’ , a rolling groove with pulsing low-end and warped rides. On the flip, ‘Long Reach’ brings a bright lead, lush pads, and hypnotic vocals before ‘If I could see the future’ closes with chugging, dub-tinged rhythms for a deep, late-night finish.

Jason Patrick’s lineage connects two of the most influential cities in electronic music: Chicago and Detroit. His unique sonic fingerprint combines influences from both cities, honing in on that unmistakable Detroit spirit, while harmoniously incorporating a subtle influence from the Windy City. As a highly-skilled, dynamic selector, he’s been a resident at Chicago’s infamous Spybar with travels across the USA, hitting cities like Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Detroit respectively. He’s also been booked to play in Europe, appearing at Tresor in Berlin and Plastic in Milan.

Equally adept in the studio, he channels years spent refining his technical skills into tracks that have landed on labels such as KMS, Peer, TMM, Future Arkive, and 4trk. His tracks have been played by artists such as Luke Slater, Tensal, Lewis Fautzi, and Philippa Pacho. Equipped with deep knowledge, superlative skills, and a progressive, driven attitude towards his work, Jason Patrick is one of the lynchpins of Chicago techno.
