Early in my journey learning guitar, piano and music theory, I composed this, my first, instrumental.  I wanted to convey a story arc, the arc of a life beginning hopefully, turbulence in the middle, and an uneasy resolution toward the end.  I realized I didn’t have to play only others’ songs but could dare to create my own.  I became hooked.

Taken from the Novit Terminus EP, "Sacrifice." This song is a contemporary adaptation of the early 1300s folk song, "Bryd one Brere," sung in Middle English. The chorus is adapted from the Middle English poem, "When þe nyhtegale singes" ("When the Nightingale Sings").

John Tabacco is an American composer, singer songwriter, producer, recording engineer, multi instrumentalist and graphic artist. He has engineered /mixed and mastered music for hundreds of New York recording artists as well as projects released on BMG: The Kemelions, RCA: Faze, Rampage/Rhino: Rhett Forrester, Columbia: Rebbie Jackson, Rykodisc : Bob Marley, Columbia: Chris Jasper, Electra: Sonia Dada and Nickleodeon’s Are You Afraid Of The Dark? He is the CEO of It Iz What It Iz Music Publishing which currently holds over 750 songs in its catalog. He has been an associate producer for IndiMusic TV and hosts a bi-weekly radio program (CLAM RADIO) on college radio WUSB.fm since 1999. He is currently the head of A&R at Modern Voices Digital Distribution.

His musical background consists of extensive study of orchestration with noted 20th century composer John Lessard, harmony with the late electronic music maverick Bulent Arel, and composition with Stony Brook University professor Peter Winkler. He received his BA in Music from Stony Brook University in 1983. 

Like an unfolding musical diary / puzzle, Tabacco’s music and art are constantly being re-worked, juxtaposed and intertwined. His style is a melding of pop - jazz -rock - avant garde / aleatory, classical and comedy.  He has been recording his music non stop since 1979.

Of note: In 1989 the satirical, absurd house song "Go House Yourself" co-written by Tabacco, Pati and DiMauro reached position 39 on Billboard's dance chart. 

In 2014 Tabacco signed a record deal with Texas, indie label, Muffin Records. They released his CD “Unfulfilled Shopping Carts Syndrome” internationally.

Novit Terminus is the electro-folk/medieval music project of Jeremy C. Wells, Ph.D., whose journey has taken him to music, to academia, and back to music again, driven by a need to process and heal from trauma. 

Formerly a tenured professor and leading scholar in historic preservation, he left academia after experiencing abuse and mobbing. Through music, he explored the psychological dynamics of his abuse, gaining insight into his own experiences and the motivations of his aggressors. This artistic exploration has been a crucial part of his healing process. The project's name, Latin for "he has come to understand the limits," reflects this experience and the exploration of boundaries through ancient European musical traditions and a dark, driving, electronic sound.

In his twenties, he was involved in the electronic music scene in Portland, Oregon (USA), creating synthpop, techno, and trance as 68000 (Silent Records) and Violet Arcana (Zoth Ommog). Now, with Novit Terminus, he merges his past musical interests with his later experiences. 

Wells' style, which he calls "Euroatavism," blends ancient European folk and medieval traditions with electronic sounds. He's drawn to modal structures, unusual time signatures, and microtonality, creating music that is both evocative and rhythmically complex. Wells plays synthesizers (virtual and real, with a fondness for analog sounds), hand percussion instruments, and sings his own vocals. He emphasizes the human element, and uses no AI in any of his compositions. 

With Novit Terminus, Wells’ focus on traditional European music has helped connect him to his ancestral roots. He sees his music as a bridge between his past and future, a way of exploring his heritage while forging a new artistic path. It's a testament to resilience, self-discovery, and the transformative power of music.
