After 31 years, I finally managed to recover this incredible piece of video game history. This is a mysterious promotional remix of "Launch Base Zone" that was commissioned by SEGA in late 1993 for a major Sonic 3 television commercial campaign.

Following the success of their Michael Jackson collaboration (which fell through due to legal issues), SEGA reached out to several major R&B artists through the same Teddy Riley production network. This track appears to be from one of those sessions - the New Jack Swing production style was perfect for SEGA's urban marketing push. The track was meant to be the centerpiece of a high-budget TV spot featuring Launch Base Zone gameplay, targeting the 18-25 demographic that SEGA was aggressively courting against Nintendo.

The collaboration was axed in early 1994 when licensing negotiations broke down over sync rights and the artist's management demanded backend royalties from game sales - something SEGA's legal department wasn't prepared to handle. Additionally, the commercial concept was deemed "too edgy" for daytime television slots, and SEGA pivoted to their safer "Blast Processing" campaign instead.

I found this CD-R in a box of promotional materials from a former SEGA marketing contractor who worked on the Sonic 3 campaign. The disc was heavily bronzed (typical PDO manufacturing defect from that era) and barely readable - had to use multiple drives to extract the audio. The intro completely glitched out due to data corruption, hence the fade-in start.

This represents the only known surviving copy of what could have been one of the most iconic video game commercial tracks of the 90s. The funky synth bass, jazzy arrangement, and those signature New Jack Swing ad-libs over the classic Launch Base Zone melody create something truly special. The identity of the vocalist remains a mystery - could be anyone from that era's R&B scene.

Echoes of You is the track I almost left off the album — but it ended up being too powerful to ignore. Originally inspired by the soulful vibe of Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, it stands apart from the rest of the project, leaning deeply into R&B. Smooth, heartfelt, and different in tone, this song became a personal favorite. I hope it resonates with you as much as it did with me.
