April 5th marks a grim anniversary.
Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Alice In Chains' Layne Staley both passed away on April 5 - 1994 and 2002 respectively.
Being that they're 2 of my favourite frontmen, I just had to dedicate my morning show on 91X to them.

This week on 91X Beer for Breakfast Brewmaster Paul Segura brings in a couple heavy hitters from WestBrew. 
Since it’s baseball season and WestBrew has a tasting room a couple blocks away from Petco Park, it was the perfect opportunity for the crew to have a couple baseball themed beers and they kick things off with Full Count San Diego Style IPA. Full Count comes in at 6.7% ABV and utilizes Mosaic cryo, Mosaic Incognito, Citra hops. Next up: Double Header Hazy Double IPA. This sweet and juicy hazy double IPA comes in at 8.4% and has notes of ripe pineapple and peachy.

Beer for Breakfast - WestBrew

This week on 91X Beer for Breakfast Brewmaster Paul Segura brought in a couple beers from Abnormal Beer Co out of Rancho Bernardo for Marty and Danielle to sample. They start things with the newest release from Abnormal, Familia Mexican Lager. This crisp and refreshing Mexican lager is very approachable for any beer drinker comes in at 4.5% ABV. This malt forward beer with a bit of corn sweetness is accompanied by citrusy lime notes from Motueka hops and a touch of herbal character from Saaz hops.
Next the Beer for Breakfast crew moves onto Boss Pour IPA. Boss Pour IPA (7% ABV) is Abnormal’s flagship San Diego IPA and features Nugget, Simcoe, Cascade, Mosaic, and Citra hops. 
Both of these beers are available in cans as well as on draft in the tasting room off Rancho Bernardo Rd and I-15.

This week on 91X Beer for Breakfast Brewmaster Paul Segura brings in a couple beers from Modern Times Brewing for Marty and Danielle to try.
They start things off with Trend Laser Hazy IPA (6.5% ABV) which utilizes Strata, Vic Secret, and Amarillo hops, giving this Hazy IPA has notes of strawberry and orange. They then moved onto Fruitlands Gose with Passionfruit & Guava (4.8% ABV). Fruitlands is tart and fruity with a touch of salt turning the whole thing into a tropical fruit fiesta on your pallet.
Modern Times has 3 tasting rooms in San Diego (Point Loma, North Park, Encinitas) and can a variety of their offerings.

Beer for Breakfast: Modern Times Brewing

This week on 91X Beer for Breakfast Brewmaster Paul Segura brings in a couple collaboration beers from Black Plague Brewing for Marty and Danielle to try.
The first beer they try is a collaboration with Booze Brothers: Down the Hatch New Zealand IPA. This cold IPA comes in at 6.8% ABV and is a very hop forward beer, but not very bitter. Brewed with Citra Cryo, Nelson Sauvignon, & Motueka this beer is packed with passionfruit and guava.
Next the Beer for Breakfast crew tries a collaboration Black Plague Brewing did with Artifex Brewing: Demigod West Coast IPA. Demigod (7% ABV) is designed to drink like a more traditional IPA so expect it to be dry and moderately bitter. . But don’t let the bitterness fool you, this beer is very juicy and packed with tropical citrus flavors.
Black Plague Brewing is celebrating their 6th anniversary on Saturday, June 10 with a beer festival from 2P – 6P. Tickets are available at their website.

This week on 91X Beer for Breakfast Brewmaster Paul Segura brings in a couple brews from Knotty Brewing out of Downtown San Diego. Knotty Brewing is a great place to pre or post drink for a Padre game since the brewery is only two block North of Petco Park on Market St & 9th Avenue.
The Beer for Breakfast crew start things off with Kangaroo Cowboy Amber ale (6% ABV).  Kangaroo Cowboy Amber is built for when you want a little more complexity with caramel maltiness and floral noble hops. They also sampled Robot Barber Pale Ale (6% ABV). This is classic American style pale ale, featuring classic American hops (Cascade & Columbus) and has a snappy bitterness with a dry finish.

Beer for Breakfast: Knotty Brewing

This week on 91X Beer for Breakfast Brewmaster Paul Segura brought in beer from Kings and Convicts Brewing. 
In 2019 Kings and Convicts Brewing out of Illinois purchased Ballast Point Brewing from Constellation and have been brewing Kings and Convicts beers in San Diego since. The Beer for Breakfast crew starts things with Legion Lager, the beer made for SD Legion rugby team. This American Lager comes in at 4.5% ABV and finishes clean with a hint of hops. They also sampled World Beer Cup winner Haze in the Park Hazy IPA. Haze in the Park is 6.2% ABV and a great example of what a Hazy IPA should be.

Beer for Breakfast - Kings And Convicts Brewing

This week on 91X Beer for Breakfast Brewmaster Paul Segura brought in a couple beers from Alesmith Brewing for Marty & Danielle to sample. They start things off with one of the cores of the Alesmith Brewing line up, .394 Pale Ale. .394 Pale Ale (6% AVB) made its debut in 2014 when Tony Gwynn, Mr. Padre, wanted to make a beer. He wanted the beer to be “light with a kick” which he elaborated further to mean full of hop character and light in body and color.
Speaking of collaborations, the next beer is a collaboration between Alesmith Brewing and Alzheimer’s San Diego, Ride Out #ALZStrong Hoppy Pilsner. Ride Out Hoppy Pilsner (5.1% ABV) is brewed with Galaxy & HBC 630 Hops and has notes of citrus and earthiness on the nose with tropical fruit, citrus, berry, and sweet fruit on the palate.

How I Remember It - July 10th, 2023

There’s a brand new brewery that opened this weekend in North Park: GOAL Brewing. 
GOAL (Get Out And Live) is located in the CRAFT North Park Igniter next to Barley & Sword Brewing and Seek Beer Co. Long-time brewing staple, Derek Gallanosa, has returned to San Diego to take the helm of the newest brewery in North Park. 
Brewmaster Paul Segura brought in Suchen Helles-style Lager (5% ABV) and Speed Yellow, West Coast IPA with Mosaic Cryo & Simcoe (6.2% ABV) for Marty and Danielle to sample.

Beer for Breakfast - GOAL Brewing

This week on 91X Beer for Breakfast Brewmaster Paul Segura treats Marty and Danielle to a couple brews from My Yard Live Beer Co in San Marcos.
The Beer for Breakfast crew starts things with Basic Batch Honey Blonde Ale. This honey blonde comes in at 6% ABV and is brewed with Orange blossom honey that finishes with an underlying sweetness.
They then move on to Flight of the Kiwi’s, a 7.2% ABV New Zealand IPA, brewed with all NZ hops (Nelson, NZ Cascade, Motueka) giving this beer notes of Sauvignon grapes, tangerines, mango and a touch of pine.

Beer for Breakfast - My Yard Live Beer Co

Brewmaster Paul Segura brought in one of San Diego’s OG breweries on Beer for Breakfast this week: Coronado Brewing Co.
They start things off with NADO (4.5% ABV), a Japanese-style lager brewed with jasmine and toasted flaked rice. NADO Japanese Lager has an upfront bitterness that fades into a light grain and rounds out with a dry, subtle finish. They then move onto Big Weekend Double IPA (8.9%ABV). This double IPA features a variety of hops like Mosaic, Citra, and Simcoe for a burst of sweet pineapple and grapefruit flavors to establish a bright tropical bitterness.

Beer for Breakfast: Coronado Brewing Co

Brewmaster Paul Segura brought in a couple tasty brews from Original 40 Brewing for Marty & Danielle to try on this week 91X Beer for Breakfast. They start with Fresh Hop Special Lager, a collaboration with Viewpoint Brewing in Del Mar and Seek Brewing in North Park. Coming in at 5.8% ABV, this special lager has loads of fresh picked Centennial from Crosby Hop Farms in Oregon and showcases the bright and fresh aroma of the Centennial hops that you would normally get in an IPA. 
They finish things off with Small Worlds West Coast IPA. Small Worlds (7% ABV) is full of flavor and utilizes Mosaic, Strata, and El Dorado hops.

On January 11, 1983, at 6 p.m., 91X followed in the footsteps of KROQ-FM in Los Angeles and flipped to the "Rock of the 80s" modern rock format. KROQ Program Director Rick Carroll was hired as station consultant. 91X played "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin as the final song of the AOR format. Immediately afterward, John Lynch made the announcement of the format change, and DJ Todd Ralston went right into "Sex (I'm a ...)" by Berlin. Former 91X on-air personality Jim LaMarca recounts the transition:
"The day 91X (then known as XETRA-FM) went "Rock of the 80s," almost no one knew it was coming, so there was no speculation. An air staff meeting was called for 3 pm. These really straight liner-card jocks were sitting around the conference room when in walks wild Rick Carroll with a cardboard box. He dumps it on the table and says, 'I'm Rick from Los Angeles and this is your new format.' The first song was played at 6 p.m. by Todd Tolkoff who was given the name Mad Max. He said, 'This is 91X "Rock of the 80s" and this is "Sex" from Berlin.' Everyone at the station (remember, he is now in Mexico 30 minutes away) thought this song was too weird. It seemed slow and goofy, but hey this was all new to us. It also took forever. Well no wonder, he was playing a long-play version so the LP should have been playing at 45 rpm. Since we had never heard the song no one knew. This happened a lot."
