"A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules from the Centre of the Ultraworld" is the debut single by the ambient house group the Orb. It was originally released in October 1989 and made the UK Singles Chart in 1990, peaking at #78. The 'Peel Session' version was also voted into #10 place in John Peel's 1990 Festive Fifty.[1] In April 1991, it was released on the debut album The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld. The title is taken from a sound effects track from Blake's 7 on BBC Sound Effects No. 26 - Sci-Fi Sound Effects titled "The Core, A Huge Evergrowing Pulsating Brain which Rules from the Centre of Ultraworld".

The ethereal chord progression used throughout was sampled from the album version of Grace Jones song "Slave to the Rhythm".

The song was featured on the soundtrack of the video game Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City. 

Throughout 1989, the Orb, along with Martin "Youth" Glover, developed the musical genre of ambient house through use of a diverse array of samples and recordings. The culmination of their musical work came when the Orb recorded a session for John Peel on BBC Radio 1. The track, then known as "Loving You", was largely improvisational; it included sound effects and samples from science fiction radio plays, nature sounds, and Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You".[2] For its release as a single on record label Big Life, the Orb changed the title to "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From the Centre of the Ultraworld". Upon the single's release, Riperton's management forced Big Life to remove the unlicensed Riperton sample, ensuring that only the initial first-week release of the single contained the original vocals of Minnie Riperton; subsequent pressings used vocals from a sound-alike.[3]

The single is 19 minutes and seven seconds long. It reached #78 on the UK singles chart. For their early releases the Orb often included "Orbital" remixes, which were by the band themselves. Following this single and its immediate follow-up the band discontinued the practice in order to avoid confusion with the band Orbital.

Musically, this track blends Acoustic Electronica and Organic House, built around a warm fingerpicked acoustic guitar, soft e-bow textures, and a subtle analog synth lead that mirrors the human voice. The vocals sit close and intimate — mature, textured, and full of quiet strength. Every breath and pause carries meaning.

The atmosphere evolves from melancholy to acceptance, from isolation to a faint rebirth — not dramatic, but deeply human. It’s a song that doesn’t seek attention, but understanding.

Still Reaching Out

"...you invent something fanciful in the middle that makes sense out of all of it..."  

While finishing up yesterday's Interbay track drop, "Retcon," I found a spoken word sample that I'd sourced...but didn't really fit the vibe of the song.  Still, I was intrigued by the sample.  So, immediately after posting "Retcon," I opened up a new project file and started working around that spoken word sample.  

"Little Men Riding Big Elephants" is the result of that effort--so, while there's very little musically or thematically that connect these two Interbay tracks, to me...they will always be linked.  

This is a lush ambient trance house tune.  It reminds me of 90s dance acts like Deep Forest, Aquamarine, The Beloved, The Orb, and even Chicane.  

In a startling admission, this is the first time that I've played a one shot sample with a sampler, rather than simply just dropping variations of that sample into the piaylist.  I remember using hardware samplers in the late 80s and 90s, but when moving to laptop...the workflow was so different, I just never tried doing it the original way...until this track.  So, when you hear that lush keyboard chord that dominates this track--that's me playing the sample.  

...and maybe doing it that way influenced the vibe of the track, taking me back to when these sounds were more prevalent (and popular.)  

It is not a peak time big room floor filler, it is a bit more subtle, a bit more moody vibes--but still with a danceable beat.  It is strange...one way I'd describe this is as somehow more "adult" than many other Interbay tracks.  Not sure where that idea comes from--perhaps, you can listen to "Little Men Riding Big Elephants" and see if you can hear what I'm talking about.  (If you do, please let me know!)  

While I like how evocative the analogy used in the spoken word sample that I picked for the title of this track is...when looking for an appropriate thumbnail image for it, I was confronted with very strong opinions and arguments letting me know that "elephant rides" should be avoided, for the sake of the animals.  I, myself, have never ridden an elephant (at the time, I was large enough that I legitimately worried for the health of even an elephant that would be burdened to carry me.  (Thankfully, I've Mounjaro'd out of that unhealthy situation...but I'm still unlikely to ride an elephant.)  

...so, rather than perpetuate a bad thing, the thumbnail is a repurposed political cartoon from the McKinley presidency.  It works.  ;)  

I had something slower and more atmospheric planned to drop today--as I often like to drop slower, moodier, prettier songs on a Sunday--but I was so excited to share this unexpected (and quickly produced) track, that I'll hold onto that other song a little longer.

Tom Lysar creates electronic music with an emotional core — shaped by atmosphere, structure, and instinct. His compositions don’t follow fixed genres but emerge from moments, moods, and inner imagery.

Much of his music is rooted in an extensive archive: early studio sessions, unfinished sketches, and custom loops originally crafted for sample packs, background cues, and small creative projects such as indie games and online content. In 2025 he began reshaping this material, refining old fragments into finished works and aligning them with his present sound. The result is a continuous flow of releases that feel both timeless and immediate — carrying the depth of past explorations into the present.

In his work, sound, memory, and motion merge into a fluid musical expression. Each track becomes an invitation: to drift, to remember, or simply to feel.

This is music that doesn’t confine — it opens space. Between light and shadow, closeness and distance.

Born 1981 in the German Democratic Republic and grown up there. In the early 90´s after the fall of the „Berliner Mauer“ all boarders are open, so a hole new universe showing up. In that period Euro Dance leads him to House Music and Underground Techno. In the late 90´s getting his own mixer and turntables. In the first years of deejaying he play only as an afterhour deejay, but this define his music. A wild bunch of possibilitys with the same intention and spirit. But there was a thing missing, he would like to have more control of the music, not just mixing tracks together. So it was an easy decision, learn how to build his own tracks. Startet with just an Amiga 500 and Startrekker. Sampling Sounds and put them new together. Startet over in 2001, because of moving to another city. In this period he been also deejaying, but stop producing music. After founding family there was a big break, only deejaying for friends and as a great hobby. In 2017 encountering the new Akai MPC. Beginning to producing music professionelly without any pc/laptop or daw, just using Akai Force & MPC Live, synths, drumcomputer and other instruments. His homestudio is builded to create music in this way. Finaly using Beatport to create mixes of good vibing music to enjoy.
