This video features Dr. Matthew L. Bechtold, Professor of Medicine, Director of Endoscopy, and Director of GI Ambulatory Services at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He’s also the co-chair of the ASPEN enteral nutrition committee. Dr. Bechtold was a mid-level associate professor when he became more interested in nutrition. This led him to pursue the Nestlé nutrition fellowship in 2013, and subsequently became involved in ASPEN.  

Dr. Bechtold credits ASPEN for the expansion of his initially small nutrition network. He now has a long list of nutrition contacts to rely on when he needs to discuss challenging cases. He highly recommends young physicians to join ASPEN committees to grow, network, and find mentors. He shares how ASPEN mentors have helped him with his own research and offers to do the same with others.

Member Spotlight: Matthew L. Bechtold, MD, FASGE, FACG, AGAF. FASPEN

This video features Dr. John C. Alverdy, Sara and Harold Lincoln Thompson Professor of Surgery and Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Alverdy’s interest in nutrition began during his research time at the University of San Francisco. There, he recognized the tremendous impact of nutrition support on the recovery of trauma patients and their outcomes. 

Dr. Alverdy received the 2023 George Blackburn Research Mentorship Award. He recalls his own mentors such as Dr. Doug Wilmore and Dr. George Blackburn in the 80s and early 90s. Through these mentors, he was inspired to study nutrition as a key measure in patient care. 

He discusses the benefits of multidisciplinary teams in nutrition research and the importance of asking the right research questions among your team. When asked about words of wisdom, Dr. Alverdy advises designing your career over your job. If someone is committed to becoming a clinician scientist, it is important to put yourself in a place where you can do the work that will make a clinical impact. Choose your first job carefully that will set yourself up for a great career, know what you want, and ask questions never asked before.

Member Spotlight: John C. Alverdy, MD

This video features Dr. Ben D. Albert, Assistant Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School and Associate in Critical Care Medicine and Pain Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Albert credits the mentorship from ASPEN's past president Nilesh Mehta, MD for sparking his interest in nutrition during his time as a critical care fellow. He hopes to educate and inspire young physicians in this same way—through encouragement to participate in research and presentations and by inspiring with hands-on technology at the patient's bedside. 

As a researcher in pediatric critical care nutrition, Dr. Albert shares his experience in how a tiny fellow project can snowball into a larger project that maps out the next five to ten years of his career. He strongly encourages involvement in ASPEN and going to national meetings to get inspired and make connections. He joined the abstract review committee and research subcommittee when he was a junior faculty and has been involved with ASPEN ever since, now serving as a member of the physician engagement committee and the associate editor for JPEN. He describes the goal of involvement in ASPEN as being something that doesn’t feel like extra work because you enjoy doing it so much and encourages others to get involved.

This video features Dr. Ruba Abdelhadi, Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and Director of Nutrition Support at Children’s Mercy Hospital. She serves on the ASPEN Board of Directors and also serves on the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists. Dr. Abdelhadi developed an interest in nutrition when she was asked to step in and develop a one-week nutrition curriculum for medical students. She was surprised to learn that there is no dedicated nutrition content in undergraduate and medical education.  

Dr. Abdelhadi shared two priorities. The first is to identify malnutrition in every clinical encounter and not miss out on opportunities to address it. The other is to provide nutrition education to all medical students, regardless of their area of specialty or education level. She emphasizes the importance of collaboration, noting that multidisciplinary work offers so much to not only patients but also professionals. Dr. Abdelhadi recommends that young professionals identify their passion and then find opportunities in all scholarly areas—teaching, clinical work, and service. She recommends joining a society such as ASPEN to find opportunities, meet people, collaborate on projects and papers, and serve the community.

Member Spotlight: Ruba Abdelhadi, MD, CPNS, CNSC, NASPGHAN-F

This video features Dr. Juan Carlos Lopez-Delgado, Professor of Critical and Emergency Care at the University of Barcelona. Dr. Lopez-Delgado’s journey to nutrition was not a straight path. He began his career in general critical care and developed an interest in nutrition after spending time as a resident in England, sparking his passion for metabolism and the liver.  

As a researcher in muscle metabolism, Dr. Lopez-Delgado shares that the use of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) during the pandemic helped his team identify how important muscle mass is in relation to mortality. He continues research today in this area with the use of BIA. Dr. Lopez-Delgado also emphasizes the importance of mentorship, noting how members from the physician engagement committee have helped to mentor and challenge him in his career. He encourages clinicians to make friends along the way and be a good person. Dr. Lopez-Delgado likes to spend his free time with his wife and 2 sons, especially watching fútbol.

This video features Dr. Nisha Mangalat, Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Gastroenterology at the St. Louis University School of Medicine and Medical Director for the Glennon Intestinal Rehabilitation and Feeding (GIRAF) Program at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. 

The GIRAF program was formed around a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to caring for complex pediatric patients with intestinal failure. The GIRAF team meets weekly to discuss patient cases and review updates provided by the patients’ parents/caregivers. This enables the team to make proactive, systematic adjustments to each patient’s nutrition therapy. Dr. Mangalat shares that the name “GIRAF” was coined by their registered dietitian while attending an ASPEN meeting. 

Dr. Mangalat holds nutrition education very close to her heart and notes several gaps in the current medical education curriculums. Dr. Mangalat is the director of the pediatric gastrointestinal fellowship program and offers some insight into how we can engage future physicians to get involved in nutrition. She advises young professionals to not be afraid to say “yes” when it relates to their career and to explore if they are curious. Whether an avenue has been explored or not, Dr. Mangalat encourages others to think, “Why not me?” when researching something they have questions about.

Central Venous Catheter Safety in Pediatric Patients with Intestinal Failure

This video features Dr. Robert Martindale, MD, PhD, FASPEN, Professor of Surgery in the Division of Gastrointestinal and General Surgery, and Medical Director of Hospital Nutrition Services at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. 

Dr. Martindale describes his fascinating career path. While working in a lab at UCLA during the summers to earn money for forestry school, Dr. Martindale became interested in human physiology. After completing his undergraduate studies, he was invited back to UCLA to work in the nutrition department as a graduate student. Here, he earned his PhD in Nutrition. This interest in nutrition then led him to enter medical school, specializing in surgery, all while enrolled in the Army which allowed him to pay for medical school. 

Dr. Martindale discusses several nutrition-related topics, including specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), the use of prebiotics and probiotics, food and the microbiome, managing patients with fistulas, and the overall future of nutrition. He highlights that we have the data that nutrition impacts outcomes; we need to sell it to the public.

Engaging Physicians in the Implementation of the Global Malnutrition Composite Score (GMCS)

This video features Dr. Senthil Sankararaman, MD, FAAP, D-NBPNS, D-ABOM, an attending physician at the UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospitals and an associate professor of pediatrics at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH. Dr. Sankararaman's interest in nutrition developed throughout his medical training, which began in India, then continued in the UK, and finally in the US. He said his experience in the Nestlé Fellowship was a game-changer.

Dr. Sankararaman provides insights into the history of cystic fibrosis (CF), its management, and advancements in treatment technology. He also discusses various training opportunities available for CF and other specialties. Currently, he collaborates with a research team as a bench scientist to conduct research on CF. Dr. Sankararaman highlights the annual ASPEN conference and its significance in demonstrating the evolution of the field each year.

Member Spotlight: Senthil Sankararaman, MD, FAAP, D-NBPNS, D-ABOM

This podcast features Dr. Jamie Bering, MD, Senior Associate Consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. 

Dr. Bering first became interested in nutrition as a GI fellow after she realized her specific interest in placing PEG tubes and working with those patients on their nutrition and hydration management post-procedure. She describes the importance that mentorship played in her career advancement and specialty in nutrition. She has been fortunate enough to have completed her training in the same institution, now working alongside her mentors. 

Dr. Bering describes gaps in the field of nutrition specific to conditions where the role of nutrition support has not yet been well defined. She is interested in researching these areas and developing an algorithm to best approach these patients and determine how nutrition support might improve their overall outcomes.

Dr. Bering is a member of the Physician Engagement Committee and describes how her committee involvement and ASPEN membership overall has led to numerous advancement opportunities in her career. She also highlights various fellowship programs that are available for young physicians who are interested in nutrition, which can help them get a jump start in this field.

Member Spotlight: Jamie Bering, MD

This spotlight is on Dr. Patricia Byers, MD, FACS. She is a Professor and Section Chief in Surgical Nutrition and Metabolic Surgery at the Ryder Trauma Center/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. 

Dr. Byers became interested in nutrition while working in trauma and critical care, where she saw the impact of nutrition support on this patient population. She credits her career development to mentors like Drs. Stanley Dudrick, Bruce Bistrian, and Miguel Echenique.

Dr. Byers also discusses the importance of a multidisciplinary team in the care of patients receiving nutrition support, and how all members of the team are able to learn and grow from each other. She highlights the minimal nutrition training that surgical residents receive and yet surgical patients can benefit the most from nutrition support. In her institution, she makes sure that her surgical residents are exposed to their nutrition support team and gain experience in writing orders for TPN.

Dr. Byers is an active member of ASPEN and contributes to various committees, including the Physician Engagement Committee. She encourages others to get involved in ASPEN to promote their careers in nutrition.
