Er wordt vaak aangenomen dat dit gedicht is geïnspireerd door het apocriefe verhaal dat een jonge Jezus , vergezeld door Jozef van Arimathea , een tinhandelaar, naar het huidige Engeland reisde en Glastonbury bezocht tijdens zijn onbekende jaren. Volgens de Britse folklore-geleerde A.W. Smith was er echter "weinig reden om te geloven dat er vóór het begin van de twintigste eeuw een mondelinge traditie bestond over een bezoek van Jezus aan Groot-Brittannië". In plaats daarvan put het gedicht uit een ouder verhaal, herhaald in Miltons "History of Britain", dat Jozef van Arimathea alleen reisde om na de dood van Jezus tot de oude Britten te prediken.
