I came up with the second part of the chorus idea very early.. the body can often kind of get in the way of love in relationships, so I felt that "I'm so sorry, that I've got a body" was kind of fitting. Next came the rest of the chorus.

The beat and the verses took forever... writing, rewriting, scrapping projects and starting over. I'm a man writing about a woman being abused so I wanted to make sure it sounded respectful. Ran my lyrics past some women to get their perspective. I think I struck the right balance, and it's a beautiful track.

The Sound of Relationship Abuse

My life really struck me as "screwed up" when I first read Dostoevsky, realizing how much his stories mirrored my own until I found my wife, my "unicorn". My childhood in Bangladesh was profoundly dysfunctional, marked by my parents' constant fighting and a year of sexual abuse by a neighbor I couldn't tell anyone about. I thought I'd escaped it, but the trauma never leaves you.

My father's death while I was in France added immense guilt and pain, compounded by a difficult job and a boss I now believe had mental health issues. Becoming a father to my beautiful daughter, while the best decision, piled on fatigue and pressure, especially with ongoing family dramas from afar. Physical pain led to a depression diagnosis, and therapy opened my eyes to my past. I learned how my mother, traumatized and forcefully married, took her frustrations out on me, and my father, brainwashed by his own dad, developed a stubborn ego. Being caught between their "South Pole and North Pole" dynamics profoundly affected my emotional development and academics, possibly due to ADHD, trauma, or dissociation.

Moving to Australia didn't stop the parental phone calls filled with their complaints, making me realize they wanted an "ally," not just a son. It took me nearly 40 years to make independent decisions without fear. I now understand my many disorders and that my past haunts my present, even if my body remembers more than my mind. Therapy is hard, bringing back memories and affecting sleep, but it's progress. Despite likely future health issues from this dysfunctional past, I've learned a lot. My main goal now is to give my daughter the good childhood I never had, and I stand with anyone else who's been through similar crap.
