In this voice over journey → there is a person listening to a new radio station .. there are two people hosting a radio show…. And the third person is listening to them…. And responding…… the two people of the radio station have a conversation about music, migration and vocalizing echoes of the past. Two people from a different generation, one young adult who during the process of this project also became a father, one already a mother of grown up daughters. Both of their lives are influenced by a decision made in the year 1975. 
We collected stories From Amsterdam Noord and Paramaribo Noord that we will broadcast to you in a conversation. These two places are 7496 KM apart. This distance is counted from the ferry in Amsterdam Noord to the ferry in Paramaribo Noord which crosses the Suriname River to New Amsterdam. The story is recorded in ‘Alab’, a cultural hub next to the ferry in Amsterdam Noord and several other places in the North of Amsterdam and Paramaribo. An echo travels between these two cities. Traces of sounds and stories are collected and can be listened to by scanning QR codes that are spread as stickers through the 2 cities. The sounds become like sound graffiti, graffiti comes from the italian word meaning scratch, so we present to you sounds and stories that are like sound scratches in the urban landscape. 


Voice over - and over - and over again
For the “Voice Over Journey” we focused on a historical year 1975, in that year people in Suriname had the choice: Keep the Dutch nationality and emigrate or take the Suriname nationality and stay.  This influenced many people's lives. With this recorded dialogue you can listen to stories of different generations that are influenced by this decision. 
We start this sound journey with a question: How to celebrate immigration? 
On the governmental page of Suriname it is written that there is “150 years of Hindu immigration” and  “170 years of Chinese immigration”, there is a Marrons Day and a day of the Natives. Celebrations with music and traditions. These days give space to celebrate but perhaps also give space to mourn or all the other emotions that come with migration. We wondered what the Netherlands and Suriname look like when immigration would be more celebrated? But perhaps along this journey we find out that migration is something that can’t be celebrated… There is a Dutch TV item from 1975 showing the impact of this decision with a news voice over that made us uncomfortable, every era knows its own style of voice overs. If you could rewrite voice overs: What would you say?
