1903 begeistert sie mit gerade einmal neun Jahren Passanten an der Ecke der 9. Straße in Chattanooga, Tennessee, mit ihren Tanzeinlagen. 1923 erscheint ihre erste Platte bei Columbia Records und macht sie schlagartig zu einer der angesagtesten Musikerinnen in ganz Amerika. Bessie Smith nimmt im Laufe ihres kurzen Lebens 160 Songs auf. Begleitet wird sie dabei unter anderem von Musikern wie Louis Armstrong und Glenn Miller. Sie spielt vor ausverkauften Häusern. Und wird schnell zu einer Legende. Bis heute inspiriert sie Musiker*innen.

2024 wäre Bessie Smith 130 geworden.

»Harlemnächte« ist eine lyrische Würdigung ihres musikalischen Werkes. Das Buch erscheint im Dezember 2024 in Brot&Kunst Verlag.

I was honoured to make 30 variations thinking of filmmusic of the used title track of German singer Lea: Monster.
