Designing for Our Future Selves: The Experience of Aging as a Potential Catalyst for an Inclusive World

Part of the sandwich generation, Deneen Day's journey as a caregiver began in the 1990's when she became the guardian and caregiver of her grandmother who was diagnosed with dementia. Her second "tour of duty" began in 2007 when her mother began to show signs of the disease. She became an advocate primarily to help her son navigate the journey with his grandmother and to help others understand the impact of the disease on families and their caregiving in children.
She facilitates two groups offering caregiving support - one for active caregivers and the other regarding Life after Loss for caregivers. She reminds caregivers that memories matter as their loved ones approach the sunset of life.

In this episode of Aging For All, host Jen Yanez Pryor speaks with gerontologist Sonia Barsness about the importance of viewing dementia through the lens of personhood. They discuss the need to shift perspectives from seeing individuals as mere patients to recognizing their full humanity and potential for living well. Sonia shares insights on the role of gerontology, available resources for those affected by dementia, and the significance of community support.
