'From Mali To Mississippi' is a journey and a bridge between the roots of Malian music, and the blues from the Delta. It is infused by the musical spirituality of the legendary Ali Farka Touré, ans the musical approach of Corey Harris.

Ali Farka Touré, a true humanist, found inspiration in the deep roots of Malian music. He perceived the nature for connecting with American blues, which he believed to be a reinterpretation of African music in an American context.

In the vicinity of my 30th birthday, I delved into these musical connections, I came to a profound realization: music serves as a universal language, one of the most direct, meaningful, and accessible means of cultural interaction. Blues, with its seemingly simple melodies, stands as a prime example of this universality. It continually seeks its origins, pursuing the perfect sound and the ideal note, reflecting an unending quest for its roots.

Taste the Sound: Rita Kamale invites Hasna & Asklou - 17/11/2023

"I ni sogoma" is how you say "good morning" in Bambara, a language spoken in Mali, West Africa.
The literal translation is "you and the morning".
Women respond, "n se!", which means "my power!"
Men respond, "n ba!", which means "my mother!"

This mix is a compilation of deep, emotionally rich, masterful African textures in the mood of strings and blues.
Featuring legendary artists from Mali, Uganda, Kenya and The Gambia.

The vocal samples heard are friends from Djoulafondo, Mali.
Photo was taken in Djoulafondo, Mali by jojoSOUL on a daily morning walk of a 3-week journey in 2023.
This is a deep collection for stillness, stretching, meditation, reflection, etc. I love to drum along.

I sing "Makambo" under my breath as I move through the tension of NYC every day. These songs bring me back when I lose focus and need a deep, settling breath. They are a very potent magic, and have the ability to ground me, which is what I wish to share. I hope you enjoy with deep breaths.

jojoSOUL is an Artist/Musician from Long Island, NY.  With 30+ years experience studying music and drums/percussion, jojo's studies have led him to composing, writing, performing, and teaching.  As a NYS vendor, jojo coordinates a music program at youth corrections facilities for the Office of Child & Family Services, as well as performing as DJ at Office of Mental Health youth facility events.  jojo works as a teaching artist in music & movement classes for all ages.  Previous venues include the National Academy Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Gramercy Theatre, Joe's Pub at the Public Theatre, and the Laurie Beechman Theatre.  jojo was invited to teach at schools at Deer Isle-Stonington, Maine for an artist residency, as well as to perform in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.  In 2023, jojo fulfilled a lifelong dream of studying music and culture while living in a village in Mali, West Africa.  jojo continues to create, perform, and study, and make handmade jewelry while living in Manhattan, NY.
